Older Okinawa style is
In the Older days, you learned how block before you threw punches. It was the same way with TKD before it became an Olympic sport
Much like the older form of Judo, you learned the throws,(tachi waza) groundwork (ne waza) throw and defend strikes.
Sambo snd catch wrestling are great as well

I taught martial arts for 20+ years and I’ve seen first hand how a kid can transform from innocent child to high moral standards and rock solid capabilities. The level of sportsmanship is very high and skills learned last a lifetime.
Let him try it for a year. If he loves it, don’t let him miss!

Karate is a very generic term. Some hard styles that kick n punch also have lots of grappling overlap. However lots of karate styles really don’t address ground fighting.

Does anyone train BJJ no gee around the St George - Prairieville area? I'd rather the no gee aspect for real life purposes, but really would want to put my kids (when older (1&2)) into it.

No gi?
Gi also has real world application considering people do wear long sleeve shirt and pants all the time.
It all depends on if you want to train for sport or self defense I suppose

I’m a BJJ Blue belt. Do it.
I’m 185 pounds and been athletic my entire life. Wrestled, boxed, and was in the USMC.
My first day at BJJ, I got my arse handed to me by a bunch of 140 pound guys.

Not a Ju Jitsu fan, but martial arts for the kids is great. All four of my gang did karate and enjoyed it. Seven may be a year or two early imo, but he will benefit whenever he starts. I started when I was ten with my next door neighbor. He made it his life’s work and has had a dojo for fifty years. The best thing we can do for our kids is expose them to as much as possible. You never know what will stick.

For parents who have girls, don't hesitate to put them in this sport.
BJJ is the great equalizer for sports. Ive seen plenty of boys crying standing there while the girls hand is raised.

Yes. Gracie United on Airline. Call Robbie Gautreaux.
There are several classes specifically for nogi.

Any martial art is good for a kid that age from everything I’ve heard. It teaches focus, determination, diligence, discipline, control over one’s body, control over one’s emotions, and it boosts confidence. It is something that I myself would like to take up so I have no issues with my son taking it up. He’s not yet 4 and I tried to get him in but he showed no interest after seeing a video on YouTube.
Will try again when he’s older.

My son took karate for three years. I got to watch him flatten 3 kids with an overhand right during sparring at various times. That was fun. Otherwise, I dont know if it helped much.

Nogi is probably less practical for real life. Typically at no gi, guys are wearing moisture whisking rash guards, and are slippery as hell. I get out of positions and submissions in nogi that I should never get out of simply because it gets slippery.
But every gym has a nogi class or two during the week, and it is good for a change of pace. Check with Bayou Jiu Jitsu. They have three great instructors, and the head instructor is a world class competitor.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. We’ve been to two classes and he loves it so far. Hoping it develops into a passion for him.
The place we’re at is a Gracie United gym that includes Jiu Jitsu & other disciplines of MMA for striking and defense as well.

Bumping this thread.
I see Gracie United BJJ mentioned for kids if you live towards St George/Ascension.
If you live closer in town what’s a good BJJ location for kids?

Both of my daughters have been taking Krav Maga for the last 10 years or so and they love it. They started Escrima in 2018 and they're loving that too.

BJJ is fantastic especially at a young age. When self defsnse becomes a priority as they mature i would suggest some krav classes. Krav and bjj are two disciplines that apply very well together
