Jay-Z went out and spent a lot of money on Sunday night, as you may have read in Page Six or seen on social media. For the birthday of his friend and Roc Nation Sports president Juan “OG” Perez, Jay ended up at the uptown Manhattan nightclub Playroom, where he ordered 40 bottles of Ace of Spades champagne, according to a receipt posted on Snapchat by a waitress named Dayhana. (Jay-Z owns the Ace of Spades brand, which is formally known as Armand de Brignac.)

He tipped $11,100 on this $80,035 tab—which, depending on who you follow on Twitter, is either the greatest gratuity ever offered to a server or a loogie in the eye of working people everywhere. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to get so riled up either way: Jay-Z tipped the most ordinary possible amount on his very big check.

Are people really faulting him for only tipping $11K?

I'd have gone $15,000 but that's respectable.

He wasn’t tipping, just trying to make reparations to waitresses for all the other black people in the country.

This is where the percentage of sales makes no sense

Is it more work for the bartender to open up bottles of expensive alcohol over cheap alcohol?

At some point, the standard 15% doesn't apply. I'd say this is one of those circumstances.

haha, there's an unwritten rule that us ballers live by-- if you run up a bar tab north of $25k it's okay to only tip 10-12%.

I thought it was acceptable to tip less on alcohol?

If it's just some skank behind the bar then I agree but I'm sure he's dealing with a higher caliber of service at that level.

Agreed. He could have tipped $5k and been more than generous. Hell, a handful of $100 bills directly to her would have been sufficient. She’s pouring champagne, not performing brain surgery.
