Jarvis DeBerry and Mardi Gras Beads

As I inferred in the comments on that article, just saying "hey make the beads in New Orleans" is probably not economically viable, they will cost a lot more, and people will either have to shell out much more to ride (which makes riding really only available to the average O-T Baller) or have to dramatically cut back on the amount of stuff they buy.
Unless we consider another option. Throw a lot less stuff off the floats, and instead take that money and use it to get more high school bands and out of state bands to perform in the parades. As well as maybe get more local non-school bands to perform in parades. My kids could catch 80 percent less stuff and be very happy (and I wouldn't have to carry all that back to the car).
I am not a member of a krewe but I have ridden in parades off and on in the past, and I would have no issue throwing a lot less stuff. But I'm curious what other think. It does seem odd to send so much money overseas (although certainly the few bead stores down here do get some of the money and some people are employed by those stores).

He still finds a way to inject race into an article about Mardi Gras beads.

Well of course. But for once he actually had a half-way decent idea. Or rather, he wrote about someone else who had a half-way decent idea.
For Jarvis, that's rare enough that I'm willing to let his racist drivel slide, just this once.

$500 mil to China
$100 mil to Plush Appeal, Beads by the Dozen, etc
$5.76 to the brothers holding the Flambeaux's
What's the problem?

He is the most pathetic race baiting excuse for a writer in the modern day. All he know how to do is write victim and poor me and my people bullshite.
Writes like he was lucky to finish high school. The main reason he's probably still at the TP is they probably pay him $24k a year and his shitty articles get a lot of hits on their website.

Most people are not going to GAF either way. I don't ride, so I don't care how much riders pay for their throws

No. You wanting to replace beads with fricking marching bands makes you a Communist.
Beads = tits = Mardi Gras
"Hey look at that marching band! Show me your tits!" I don't think so, Commie frick.

Oh boy........

Carol Bebelle, the executive director of Ashe´Cultural Arts Center, said, "It just makes no sense at all" that the New Orleanians who create the culture that attracts tourists from around the world are, for the most part, "struggling people."

their goal is to create a fairer New Orleans, one where, for example, poor black communities get a financial benefit for the culture they produce.

They should all be glass beads strung by hand...but you'd have to kidnap the hippies after jazz fest to build them for the following year.

Watch the documentary on making beads, that's a good industry to leave in China.

Black people created Mardi Gras... learn something new everyday.

I wonder if the "culture" he is talking about is the one where rival drug dealers are shooting it out with AK's on Canal Street during lunch time. Or the one where 80% of the children are born to single mothers. Or maybe it's the culture where three consecutive generations of a family have been on welfare and never held a job. Is that the culture that needs financial benefit?
GTFO of here with that article. Even the Times Picayune should be embarrassed.

You owe it to them... damn white devil.

No shite.
I would say that many black people see great $$$ during Mardi Gras, including the bands and marching groups.
Dumb arse article.

I'm all for recycling and throwing less beads. The amount thrown at Endymion this year was obscene. I saw so many people catching beads and then throwing them on the ground where they are later scooped up with the rest of the garbage.

The Times Picayune should be embarrassed for employing that race baiting idiot.

I'm guessing you are not from NOLA, as not a single person I have ever met the entire life I've lived here, thinks Mardi Gras is about beads and tits. We leave that to the out of towners.

Could we maybe talk about the idea and not how Jarvis is a race baiting idiot? We know that already.
Just pretend some one else wrote the article.
