I had it up in my eye and wrapping around the side of my face and scalp. It sucked massively. There was still on and off pain and tenderness for months after it was gone.
ETA I think I was 40 when I got it.

There are cases where shingles have caused severe eye problems including blindness.
Posted on 8/2/25 at 7:05 pm to LSUA 75
Had it in October last year. Left side of head and eye. Ended up in hospital for 7 days on IV drip.
Still on valtrex and steroid eye drops today.
Still have phantom itching in the scalp.
It was the worst pain I have ever experienced. Its deep down in the nerves so not much you can do to ease it.
Get your shingles vax baws.

I was lucky not to have long term damage, but doctors will keep me on steroid drops long-term in case there is a flare up.

That is good to hear. Stories like yours and others need to be heard.

That second dose knocks most people on their arse for a couple of days.
I heard that also, but got them anyways. No side effects

I had shingles at 7. Prevented me getting chicken pox at least. I’ve had the 2-shot vax.

I had a breakout on face/head in '22. caught it early so the blisters on my bald head weren't that bad. started Famciclovir and it cleared it up.
BUT I had some eye involvement and I still don't have crystal clear vision.
Opthamologist says things look good though.
Dr.s really don't like steroid drops long term but I still use. originally on drops and Acyclovir for a few years.

There is a “window” of time to address the neuralgia or else it may become permanent. That window is about 2 months.

Friend's dad got shingles earlier this year on his face and head and in his eye. Not sure if it was the involvement of the eye or if it would have happened anyway, but he ended up in the hospital with with encephalitis.

I had chicken pox as a kid and it was so mild nobody remembered it. I had to have a test to see if I had the antibodies.
I never get sick and was around COVID about 5 times and never caught it. I’m kind of the “isn’t broke don’t fix it” mindset but I’ve heard so many horror stories I’ll probably get it.

The first shot my arm got red and I had a shingles like lesion on my hand that itched bad for 2 weeks. The second shot I had no ill effects. I had shingles once 10-12 years ago. It wrapped around my midsection. I had scars for awhile but they faded.

Currently between shot 1 and shot 2. The first shot was nothing. No side effects at all. While I haven’t had shingles, I did have chicken pox as a kid. Don’t want that coming back.
OP is giving good advice.

I recognized very early symptoms on my husband's back and he got Valtrex on day 2 of the appearance of the problem. His was definitely caused by the stress of a family matter.
Others I know have had it without diagnoses and had misery.
A friend over in Asheville has been suffering from if for over two years and she had the shots. That she got it bad confounded her doctors- that gave her no relief, of course.

How rough is the vaccine?

First shot was ok, second shot gave me double vision for a month. Doctors said they had never seen that before as a side effect. Eventually my vision fixed itself but I wore an eye patch for a month to drive and work.

I took shot 1 and am due for the second shot currently. I had no trouble with the first shot. My Doc told me to take 2 Tylenol 4 hrs prior to the 2nd shot to stave off ill effects. I'll do what he suggests and hope for the best but I'm definitely getting the second shot. I want no part of the shingles. My Dad lost the vision in his left eye due to shingles. He had cancer and said the shingles was worse than the cancer. My Mom had shingles during chemo for cancer. Her pain from shingles was really bad.

I had shingles at 58. I was at work, in a lot of pain, but made it through the day. I was commuting home with my wife and I remember telling her , "I think I need to go to the ER". By the time we were waiting in the ER, I was about ready to pass out when they brought me back. They gave me morphine, what a great rush, took the pain level down from a 9/10 to a 3-4/10, but they never really gave me a diagnosis. The next day I went to my PC Doctor, and he immediately diagnosed me with shingles after seeing the line of a rash on my back. I was started on Gabapentin for treatment. Can vouch for the pain, it kicked my arse, I agree as to getting the 2 shots to avoid this condition. I waited a few years, but I finally followed up for the shots, I don't want to ever get it again!

Many on this board won't take any vaccine since they know better.
Never took the Covid shot, mainly because it’s not a freaking vaccine and definitely didn’t have enough test history. But you better bet I took the Shingles Vaccine. See my dad deal with that shite and wasn’t anyway I’m going thru that if there is a safe and proven vaccine for it.
