Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul testified that, after St. George's creation was approved by voters, the city-parish asked all department heads to prepare two budgets: a standstill budget and one contemplating a 20% budget cut. Such a cut, he said, would have a "significantly detrimental impact" on the police department's ability to do its job and would force layoffs.

The fact that a 20% cut in BRPD services should be needed tells me all I need to know. Why should there need to be any cut in BRPD because they don't have to service the unincorporated area, that is unless this is only about money for Baton Rouge. This is admitting what we all know, Baton Rouge wants to keep its tax colony without having to provide services.

BRPD doesn’t even provide service to the fricking city of Baton Rouge!

There we solved the duplication of services.

I always questioned why we need two police entities; police and sheriff. The bad guys cross city limits all the time. Why staff teo homicide divisions, two call centers, two of everything?

BRFD boasts the highest rated fire service in the nation allowing BR residents to save on insurance, but they have been doing it with our tax dollars helping out.

BR has been having their cake and we have been paying for their ice cream.

But look what they have done with all of our tax dollars. They have neglected their police, they neglected drainage, and they let a little old lady volunteer spearhead their trash pick up. Meanwhile they spend millions on social services brought to us by a bunch of NGOs who are paid from the top.

It is astounding how ignorant some people are.

For some reason it seems like the south Louisiana area is obsessed with state politics. I couldn’t find 10 people around where I live that would take the time to discuss any of this stuff

What an awful take

Traditionally, county sheriff's hold a lot more responsibility and authority. It's also an elected office.

Local police departments are just that - a locality.

I heard that Jordan Faircloth lost the local election by 2 votes. I know 2 people that planned on voting for him but have Covid and couldn’t get pout to vote.. 2 freaking votes. Your vote DOES matter locally.

fricking this.

I went to Blues Festival downtown on the final day of early voting. I set down my beer and took 5 minutes to go inside and vote. I told my whole group of friends I was with to pop in and do the same. Not a single one did.

If you have lived in south LA and don’t think politics are important, you are an idiot.

If you haven’t lived in south LA and think it is weird for politics to be such a big issue, you are ignorant.

This is directed to the guy who made the quoted post, not you.

May not have an option depending on what happens with St George.

If BRPD becomes insolvent, then they could be merged with the sheriff which takes control away from the mayor.

As ugly as it sounds to some Baton Rouge needs gentrification in the north.

You are taking about an area that spans several zip codes. The answer isn’t to “gentrify” north Baton Rouge. It isn’t everyone else’s responsibility to make an area of town better for its residents which isn’t exactly solved by buying their property to force them elsewhere.

Yeah, those people aren't just going to be absorbed into the earth if you gentrify their spaces They're going to just move elsewhere. Leave them where they are IMO.

One thing about BR is that our rough neighborhoods are mostly off in their own bubble. I say this generally speaking, because there are several rough patches in south BR. For the most part, though, the worst of the worst is regulated to one part of town.

They currently pay for services that do not serve them and they want it to stop. They first wanted a school district and then Sen Broome told them if they wanted a school district, start your own city,...so they did. Now she is suing them as mayor.

Technically she's suing as a private citizen who coincidentally happens to be mayor...

ETA: Sorry, Mayor-President...

BR does not provide fire, water, gas, police, etc, to these areas, as they are all covered by special districts, the parish sheriff, parish agencies, or private industry.

Yet these areas are paying for BRFD and BRPD through the guaranteed percentage of “general fund” moneys for the whole parish despite those entities only covering BR and not unincorporated areas

That’s fricking insane.

Yep.

And the new city is getting sued for causing “undue hardship” on BR… for no longer giving up a ton of money to the general fund to pay BR’s bills.
