I’m more concerned with the mortality rate and amounts needs hospitalization, the rate over there is crazy high

Numbers like this are going to be so skewed bc of the availability/methodology of testing and the time it takes for tests to come back and for this virus to incubate and show itself.
Italy itself can barely be looked at as a monolith. Lombardy is really the only province where harsh measures have been going on long enough and consistently enough where you should really be seeing consistent results.
But places like Rome and Naples still have likely not seen the worst as they didn’t put in measures until later.

There are a whole lot of idiots out there that don't get it. Numbers are not going to go down but net new cases are not accelerating. They are trying to halt geometric expansion and they are winning.
Things are going to look very bad for at least 2 more weeks there as testing expands and the geographic footprint of the disease hits other areas.
You have a huge part of that country with minimal cases and those areas will have some rapid growth at some point.
The same thing will happen in the US. The curve will begin to flatten in places like Louisiana and New York but then areas not hard hit and not on lockdown yet will start to see accelerating growth.
