Italy was always a very fractured country

Was watching the James May series on his travels in various countries... In this case Italy. In the episode he brings up this "fractured" point. Foreign TV isn't delivered in subtitles like most of the world... They overlay Italian... This came about because of so many dialects from so many fractured areas that govt wanted one standardized language so they required the dubbing..so people would hear ..one language

Italy was horrible in WW2...but they gave us Italian food.

Germany was horrible in WW2...but they gave us Kraut.

If German food was better, we'd be more forgiving.

Italians are lovers not fighters.

My Dad (USMC) was stationed in Greece in the late 50's. He said "The Greeks generally don't like Americans, but they are great fighters." They kicked arse with antiquated weapons in WWII.

He had some pictures from Greece - he's with some other guy and neither is in uniform. They look like operatives LOL.

Here's the series in case y'all were wondering

GREAT SERIES. Their "Pearl Harbor in real time" episodes were incredible

If you start in 1939 you get a very detailed account of "The Winter War" between Finland and USSR. The Fins don't get enough credit for their fighting spirit.

I watch them during my lunch break

A long time ago I remember playing a strategy game, “ Tobruk”, based on the north African tank battles in that area.

One side in that game controls German and Italian forces, and I remember the Italian tanks were only good as diversions. In fact one of the Italian tanks carried the name “Flaming Coffin”.

The Regia Marina had good ships. Their biggest problem was lack of fuel for training. If they could have been better prepared during the inter-war years they could have posed a significant problem for the Brits (although falling behind in the radar game was a massive problem).

Some of their fighter planes weren't horrible, either. But, again, the inability to maintain training proficiency was a killer.

*Their armor was complete dog crap.

Italy’s navy was actually pretty decent, but they lacked crucial & necessary resources which made it a navy made of glass instead of steel.

One of italys problems was it spent its money and modernized its armed forces too early. War starts in 1935-37 Italy is powerful. By 1940-41 it's all obsolete.

Soviets had the same issue, but traded land and people for time and lend lease

Italy was literally the only European power that couldn't conquer a weak African country. Even Belgium had their own colony, BELGIUM.

They conquered many African countries. Please read history more often.
