Italy has reported the highest daily death toll of any country since the outbreak began, with 969 new deaths, bringing the total coronavirus related deaths to 9,134, among 86,498 cases.
Global COVID-19 death toll rises above 25,000 people, with Italy and Spain reporting almost 2,000 fatalities in one day.

I don't understand how they have a 10% mortality rate and is so much higher than everywhere else.

Wait for Spain to say "hold my beer".
Also, Italy has an older population and culturally it is very normal for the elderly to live with younger family members. Quite simply, they have more old people and a much higher percentage of their old people are getting it there because of these things.

You could make the argument that they have, as their number of new cases continues to fall.
The death curve will continue to rise even after the infected curve flattens or falls

-Aged population
-High percentage of smoking population
-High percentage of Chinese immigrant workers so infection initiated from many people in many parts of the country. Many paths to initial spread.

Great point. Deaths lag cases. So, in theory, a week or so after the cases begin to fall, we should see a reduction in deaths.

Im sure the older population has a lot to do with it but I think its been said a zillion times, when the capacity of a hospital to give care gets overwhelmed people that wouldn't have died, die.

As someone else explained above they have a geriatric population. It's common for these geezers to live in multi generational homes making it essentially impossible for them to self quarantine.

National healthcare that is inadequate and waaaaay underfunded and they are very social in their culture so things spread easily.
