A total of 80,539 cases and 8,165 deaths.

Why the frick are new cases surging??????

It makes no damn sense. None

Are they testing more people or something?

This is not what the flatten the curve people said would happen!

What are the prior numbers?

By my recollection this isn't the death or new case peak but they still appear to be at the relative top of the hill, yes?

Flattening - but not on a downward trajectory yet?

Most deaths and I think most deaths per cases.

They’re getting raped by this.

Looks like it. Between the variations on how long it takes for symptoms to occur it's not really surprising that it will take a while to see really decreasing numbers.

IMHOFWIW

Didn't they have like 790+ deaths over the weekend (on one day)?

It's not the new cases that are concerning. It's the fact that the mortality rate is keeping pace.

The deaths have leveled out, not sure what you are talking about?

Furthermore, yes of course the number of cases are going to stay high. They will likely stay high for a while as we test more and more people.

Remember there was a long time where they didn't even test most people that weren't very sick or old.

Did you people really think this was going to go away in a day? Its been about a week of 600+ deaths a day. I'd expect another week or so like this, hopefully less.

the past 3 days have been the #2, #3, and #4 most deadly in italy, respectively.

So i guess it is decreasing a little, maybe it is the flat part of the curve right now

With them being at the top of the curve wouldn't that make sense? I mean, the system is still incredibly burdened and I can't imagine that improves much until the downward trend begins (and really probably not until 7-10 days after?)

I have no background/aptitude for this stuff, but I would assume we'd be looking for serious case fall off before we could hope for serious death decrease?

Italy doc posted on our private physician board yesterday that he couldn’t even give a vent to a 55 year old yesterday. Had to give the last to spot to a 45 year old instead. They are a mess.

That lines up with what we've been hearing out of Italy. The death rate is so high because they don't have the capacity to treat the critically ill. I mean, 10% is nuts.

It is the oldest or 2nd oldest population and they like to smoke. The numbers shouldn't be surprising.

They aren't

But Italy will continue to face a high death toll because of the at risk people that are currently being treated

The latest numbers show out of the remaining cases Italy has 3600 that are serious/critical. Meaning you can expect a decent portion of those people not to make it.
