We've started using clear screens at trade shows. The quality isn't great yet, but it is insanely cool to just have a window that can also be a TV.

When HD technology first came out, I bought a 36" Sony Trinitron tube model. Holy frick! That thing must have weighed a full ton.
Back then I was in the best physical shape of my life and could barely lift it. No way I could do it today.
I bought a beastly 32 inch Samsung tube. I think it weighed 165 lbs. Called a buddy to help me carry it up one flight of stairs into our apartment, got it inside and unboxed, and it had a small crack in the housing. And the screen wouldn't show anything. We had sound, but no picture. I called the store we got it from the next day, and they brought out a replacement and had to carry the new one up the stairs, and the busted one back down. They were probably cussing me left and right, but I slipped them both a $20 when they were done and their attitude changed. I could barely get it off the ground when we moved, but once I had it I could carry it fine. My petite wife tried to help, and I was honestly worried she would get hurt if she did, so I managed it alone. Being young and dumb and thinking you can handle that kind of size and weight was great. Years later it transferred into Dad strength. I could probably still move something of that size, but I would be grabbing a dolly or a handtruck instead these days.

quote:I think 99% of us are your "average TV viewer". I have a cheapo Hisense now, which replaced a cheapo Sceptre lcd that lasted quite a few yrs, that replaced an LG plasma. Which replaced some gigantic rear-projection "HD" tv, that I almost think was still in 4:3 format.
I will say this, all TV's are not alike. Size isn't everything (TWHS). If you do a little research, you will see that there are a lot of other issues that bring value to a TV, such as picture quality, how the picture is created, refresh rates, cheap parts vs. quality parts.
To an average TV viewer, it probably doesn't matter. But if you are particular about your picture quality, lighting conditions, refresh rates (Makes a HUGE difference when watching sports, or gaming on your TV), etc., you will have to pay more than prices you are seeing for a generic TV. When I bought my last one, I did a lot of research in the OLED vs. QLED vs. NEO QLED vs. UHD.
I can say this- each TV cost less in number figure (let alone actual price) than the one before it.
The LG looked great, even though it was 720. The Sceptre, despite being many tiers below what the LG was, looked better, due to being 4k.
The Hisense looks as good, is bigger, and was cheaper despite being a "smart tv" and the Sceptre being just a monitor.
I have been running everything through a Yamaha AV receiver, which I have upgraded once- to go from "HD" to "4K". Wired speakers and powered subwoofer, still in place from the orginal setup (not Yamaha, I forget the brand) and properly tuned for where they are. I don't use the "smart" functions on the TV, it's just video output. I use a firestick, roku and other things plugged into the receiver. I need to figure out the settings on the Hisense to where when it's powered on, it goes straight to AV receiver instead of scrolling to it.
quote:I'm sure it is, but I also think that's something people use to justify why they spent 10x more than the next guy.
It's way more technical now than you think.
We game on PCs with 34" curved 2K monitors w high refresh rates.
*I bought a cheap pair of sunglasses on clearance, that has a camera in the frame, between the lenses. I think they were they were 80% off.
I promise you this- sitting at my PC, the actual view of the monitor is larger than the 65" from my sofa. The sunglass camera confirms it, the picture is bigger. And there's no dropoff on image quality between either.

I can get an 85 inch for like $600
I took an old TV from work to the farm for the back porch. It was bought in about 2006 and was a 40" samsung plasma. I paid $2600 for it at Circuit City.

Actually I bought 4 of them at the time and they are all still working. So I have 3 spares for when it goes out.

Theres no reason an iphone should cost $1000. The cost of production isnt anywhere close.
It costs that much because people will pay for it.
If some version of Android developed a brand that will compete better, you'll see the price drop.

I remember as a kid driving home in the backseat of our Vista Cruiser and seeing at least three or four TV repair shops on the way. I haven’t seen a TV repair shop in at least 20 years.
Remember, Spicoli's dad had an awesome set of tools because he was a TV repairman! I guess his dad is out of work now. He's probably an influencer/blogger.
In high school in the late 70s I took electronics shop 3 consecutive years. I could fix any tube TV out there. It actually isn't that difficult.
Now a days, there is very little that can be fixed. If one fails, you just trash it and buy another cheap one.

I still have and use daily a 50" Samsung plasma TV. The picture is still the best there is, imo. Yes it's an energy hog, but it's been hanging on the wall since 2008 so I could care less how heavy it is.

I moved a 32 inch Sony down a flight of stairs and loaded it in my truck by myself when I was in my 20s.
I couldn’t see doing that now without a tractor. Must have been solid glass.

Saw a 98” for $2499 the other day and laughed that it was cheaper than my 55” was 20 years ago.
No shite . I bought a Mitsubishi 55" TV in the early 2000's for something around 2500 .. damn this was was ridiculously huge.. so big it has wheels to adjust it..

At some point, you cant sit far enough way to see the entire screen. Imo that is ~100" screen.
You get used to it very quickly. I am currently sitting with my eyes 77" from a 100" screen and it is fine, very immersive but fine. In the HT our primary seat row puts our eyes at ~108" to view a 139" wide (164" diag) 16:9 screen and it is almost perfect, if anything I would go bigger.

is that a projector?
and how did you decide this was the correct setup for you?

No, the good plasmas were $5k and up back then.
And they were tiny back then. If you wanted a 50" plus TV the SOTA was CRT RPTVs with 9" guns mainly from Mits. You could get a 55" under $5k but the 65 and 73 were over $5k and not just the price they also took up a lot of real estate in a room.

This is no bullshite. Since this thread was started, the bottom part of my TV screen has started to get darker and then blink. If I turn it off then back on, it stops for awhile then eventually starts doing it again so I will likely be purchasing a new TV soon so I have been looking and the are relatively cheap.
If anyone has a suggestion as to why it could be blinking after being on after so long, that would fix the problem, I would more than appreciate it because I just prefer not to spend money..
