It doesn't make you a "cool dad" when you tell kids to call you by your first name

It makes you a loser. I teach my kids to respect their elders, I don't need you telling my 6 year old some bs about "Mr. Smith is my dad, call me Bill." I heard him call his classmates Dad by his first name and when I corrected him the Dad told me he told my son he prefers the kids to call him by his first name. I told him my son won't be doing that. Whats wrong with people?

Young parents don't parent. It's why their kids are the way they are and become the adults they become.

Dude he’s 6 years old
Give it a few years and he’ll be banging Mr Bill Smiths wife and his daughters

Are you turning to dust yet?

It’s about as annoying as people saying “um, Mr. _____ is my father.” Implying you should not use “Mr.”

I hate when people refer to themself as Mr ____ .

This is totally lost.
My dad would whip that arse, if we didn't say "Sir" to someone old enough to be our parents.
I'm closing in on 40 and notice how disrespectful 20 to 30 year olds are when dealing with older more experienced folk.

I was raised to say Mr. Bill if the parent (Bill in this case) wants to go by their first name. Is that not a thing anymore?

My kids call me “Dad”, but they do call our friendly neighbor by his first name, “Jody”.

I always refer to people that way I was introduced to them unless them tell me otherwise. If someone asks to be called Bill, I feel the respectful thing to do is call them Bill.

Same. Raised to say Mr. Last Name for those I didn't know well and Mr. Steve or whatever for closer family friends and acquaintances. It's been such a habit for all these years I still say Mr/Mrs first name when seeing hometown folks and even in business w older men and women. My kiddo has the same mindset now because that's all she's heard. Oddly, I find it so strange to be called Mr. first or last.

I don’t allow my friends kids or my kids friends to call me “Dave”, but I much prefer Mr Dave over Mr *last name*. I’m less than 40, and, IMO, people my age shouldn’t be called “Mr *last name*”
