then why would you ask me if I wore a uniform everyday like the military does?

To demonstrate that just because an action may have some useful attribute in certain situations doesn't mean that the action is needed or even useful in other situations. I wasn't refuting your first point. It was a fine response to the person to whom you were responded (who made an overly broad statement).

I don't know. I work in a law firm. Maybe I'm just lucky that I don't work with a lot of miserable people.

Jumping the light - In the North, it is common for oncoming traffic to wait as a vehicle trying to turn left is allowed to enter/clear the intersection first once the light goes green

Frick that.

I hate when people turtle their arse broad in the middle of an intersection when there's no spot to go and just wait til thed light turns red and then pull in front if you.

saying sir or ma'am is not always necessary.... I dont say it to my kids or even my friends....but I do use it in certain situations.

Just like I would wear a uniform in certain situations....if necassary

I feel like we do this once a month on the OT with the "____ people don't act like southerners" threads. I guess it's a nice pat on the back.

This is accurate. Grew up back east and I still go back a good bit. The difference is night and day. I like the south much better.

My first trip to Boston I was by myself killing some time and was in an empty bar, I approached the bartender and said "can I start a tab?", as in, opposed to having to pay for each drink at a time since some places are different. He looks me dead in the eye and goes "you gonna buy something?"

It was then I knew it was a bit of a less hospitable region than I was used to.

This reminds me of my first time at a diner in Jersey. I'm looking at the menu and ask the waitress "Y'all don't serve biscuits?" She says " No and we don't serve grits either" with a rude tone.

Have lived in Boston 6 years and have no idea what you're talking about.

Sounds like you were the one who was somewhat rude first.

I've found Boston to be friendlier/more social than other places in the Northeast, Pacific NW or generalized "north."

I haven't been enough to know whether it's a general demeanor thing or if it's positive feedback from being pretty social/polite.

Eh, MN, the Dakotas, WI, and IA are not really as you describe. And that is a large area I would define as "The North", along with Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. And get out of Chicagoland and Detroit, and most people are treated with respect like you describe the South.

I'm on page 3 but so far "the North" in this thread seems to be the Northeast.

Serious though. Yes, being from the South is a good play.

It can definitely work in your benefit. Several years back I was out at a bar in Chicago. I stepped outside for a second and as I was going back in I approached the door at the the same time as a girl. Instinctively, I held the door open and gestured for her to walk in ahead of me not really thinking it was a big deal since I had done that thousands of time growing up.

Her reaction was one of shock as if I had just parted the red sea and she immediately asked me if I was from the south? Not having spent much time up north before that I was a bit confused by her reaction and initially wondered if I had done something to insult her. Quite the contrary. She said she had never had a guy do that for her before and thought it was great. We ended up hanging out the rest of the night

All because I figured I was just being polite.

Then I get back down south and have a southern girl get bent out of shape because I didn't open the door for her to get in my truck before we drove to frickin Burger King on a Tuesday night
