Perplexed and caught off guard yes. Actually mad or insulted is a little southern fairy tale that has been passed along

I think he's just getting at the point that because the military does something a certain way doesn't mean it has to translate to everyday citizen life. The use of 'ma'am' and 'sir' are used to create a structured, homogeneous environment just like the use of uniforms. It doesn't necessarily mean that the everyday citizen also needs to be doing it.

Correct.

That’s it. I’ve never seen anyone get hostile about it; more perplexed/somewhat suspicious. Or “oh gosh! Don’t call me ma’am!” But since they aren’t falling over with gratitude, we say they were rude.

I’ll say this; when adults compliment you on your manners, you can tell that it’s not something they’re used to.

I’ve had people there ask me not to refer to them as ma’am or sir, but not angrily

That rarely happens in my experience in the south

You have seen someone get mad up north because a door was held open for them?

Come on man

That’s like me believing the guy from yankeedroppings who is saying his neighbors in Louisiana rode alligators to work

That's fair...that's more of the reaction I got than someone being outright pissed about it.

OK, here's my anecdote. I've lived up here for over a decade, and I've never seen anyone be insulted by it.

I’ve said it on here before, but I expected Louisiana to be a lot more like The Waterboy before I moved here I was disappointed.

But you asked why if it wasn't important then why does the military do it?

If uniforms aren't important, why do the military use them?

They are both shooting for a similar end game, as I mentioned above, to create a structured, disciplined environment.

Just wear an LSU shirt and people are friendly everywhere.

Even the first Saturday in November in Bryant-Denny Stadium?

EDIT: It has been pointed out to me that those beings, in fact, are subhuman and are not considered people. I retract my question.

A black friend of mine in New Orleans had gone on vacation to Montreal.
They came back into New Hampshire and stopped at a McDonalds.
He said everybody stared at them. Nobody said anything, but they just kept staring. They ate their meals and left. Everybody kept on staring.

He guessed nobody in the restaurant had ever seen a black who was really black before, much less two of them together as his wife was as dark as he was.

Racist? maybe, curious at least.

The fact that you called New Yorkers "New Yorkians" shows that you have little to no idea what you're talking about. Run along.

To separate the good guys from the bad guys, and so the good guys dont kill each other in battle

Same reason sports teams wear different uniforms.
