If it's so useless why does our military use it?
They also wear uniforms. Do you wear uniforms on a daily basis?

There are different sets of "common courtesy"
Usually in the North, you don't say sir/ma'am but you convey respect through the tone of your voice and body langauage
Another example:
Jumping the light - In the North, it is common for oncoming traffic to wait as a vehicle trying to turn left is allowed to enter/clear the intersection first once the light goes green
Getting up for elderly on subway - common occurance but not always
Shoveling snow for your elderly neighbor or single female - My dad would insist I shoveled the old lady's driveway each snowstorm
I grew up on Long Island and have lived down South for 20 years. In my experience there are equal ratios of asshats to nice people in both regions.

I agree with holding doors, but I've learned, that even in the South, most people prefer you not to address them like this, unless it's someone really old-fashioned that you know expects it.

In certain situations. If I'm at a gas station and someone is just paying for gas, I'll let them go ahead. Same if I'm at the grocery store and someone just has a couple of items.

Been to 3 places where me being me was an issue, it seemed. Philly and Wisconsin (both places immediately asked about accent and if I were a Cowboys fan). Yeah, of course I am and immediately they fostered resentment. The other was Honolulu. For no other reason than I wasn't local. Odd ducks, those natives.
Never had an issue anywhere else.

I have been bitched at by folks on more than one occasion for using it up here because it makes people feel 'old', so this isn't totally untrue.
Well guess what, Carol, you are old. Now go nod off after Wheel of Fortune is over.

That’s how people take it in my memory. They think you’re calling them old/considering them your elder, not being polite.

I’ve been to Philly and Baltimore. I already know

Eh, MN, the Dakotas, WI, and IA are not really as you describe. And that is a large area I would define as "The North", along with Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. And get out of Chicagoland and Detroit, and most people are treated with respect like you describe the South.

I 100% think all the stories of “I held a door open up north and they were angry” “I said yes ma’am and she was insulted” are mainly bullshite fairy tale stories that got passed along

I think he's just getting at the point that because the military does something a certain way doesn't mean it has to translate to everyday citizen life. The use of 'ma'am' and 'sir' are used to create a structured, homogeneous environment just like the use of uniforms. It doesn't necessarily mean that the everyday citizen also needs to be doing it.

It hasn't happened more than 2 or 3 times to me, but it's happened. Never with opening a door, though.
