Confused why the US cares so much about Israel at all

They are well represented in our government, for starters.

We are far more their allies than they are ours. It ain’t a perfect relationship, but better than the alternatives for sure.

An Israeli grandmother was murdered by Hamas before footage of her bloodied corpse was filmed and uploaded to her Facebook account to be shared with her relatives.

Footage of Blacha Levenson’s body lying on the floor with “blood surrounding her and men with guns standing above her,” was the first notification given to her family that she had been murdered, and that terrorists had “infiltrated” Israel.

Ms Levenson’s grandson, Yoav Bayder, 24, who lives in Canada, said he was “in disbelief” when he saw the clip while on Facebook checking “everyone [in his family] was alright” amid initial reports of missiles being fired into the south of the country.

Not bagging on you for it, but yea this has been around for a few days now.

Which is why its so completely absurd for Hamas to now be playing victim and pretending they didnt just storm into Israel and massacre civilians. They fricking uploaded themselves doing it to the victims social media.

People keep saying that this kills it. I’m fairly certain it won’t kill it, but will put it on pause for now.

I think SA is already on record saying that they have only paused talks and they look forward to resuming them when this settles down. That's pretty much them saying that this hasn't killed the talks.

They’re not closing down the embassy in Lebanon unless Israel declares war on Lebanon proper. If Hezbollah and Israel really start going at you’ll probably see embassy staff dependents being evacuated with at least a skeleton staff left in place.

Yep. Hez and Lebanon are similar in a lot of ways to Pali/PA/Hamas.

There’s the Lebanese government and there’s Hez. Everyone knows Hez basically runs the country, but governments formally deal with the Lebanese government.

Shutting down the Embassy would signal/admit that Hez is in charge, something we know but don’t want to formally acknowledge as it would publicly undermine Lebanon.

Dependents might be ushered out, but closing an Embassy completely is very significant on the world stage.

John Kirby:

- Civilians in Gaza are not responsible for what Hamas did

- We are holding talks with countries, including Qatar, which has open lines of communication with Hamas, to release the hostages

- What makes matters more difficult is that we do not know where the missing Americans are, nor do we have information about their health conditions.

I bet Israel wish that they had more gun carrying and owning citizens now.

Seems like they could use a couple of Baws right about now.

where both sides have been brutally slaughtering the other.

I don't proclaim to be an expert on this, but one side just massacred soft targets intentionally via terrorism, so I think we'll go with them being the worse party for now.

They have acknowledged this being a problem and in response have now been handing out guns & ammo to citizens, primarily in the settlements and outlying areas. I suspect they will be changing their gun laws soon so that citizens have have them.

An awful lot of other countries are attempting to demand “peace” here, which in this case means “let Hamas literally get away with murder.”
Well, Qatar is the main mediator each time such conflicts arise between these parties. They are an intermediary between our gov, the Sauds, Egypt, and even Eye Ran at times.

If Qatar is pushing for mediation, they are doing so at the behest of our own gov...

I don't see this conflict spiraling because it hasn't already and because we've seen no ground incursion yet...

The hostages are playing a major role in the response, or lack thereof, we've seen so far, and the push for mediation...

Unfortunately, if you've been watching events there over the decades, this is cyclical in nature...

The Israelis have killed far more Palestinans than the other way around.

All numbers *might* indicate is who’s better at killin’. It has little to do with the legitimacy of it.

That’s why the usual “disproportionate response” criticism is laughable. Just because Hamas launches rockets and Israel comes back with airpower and PGM, that doesn’t mean Hamas is suddenly the victim.
