The 2017 Turku attack took place on 18 August 2017 at around 16:02–16:05 local time (UTC+3) when 10 people were stabbed in central Turku, Southwest Finland. Two women were killed in the attack and eight people sustained injuries.

Police were informed at 16:02. Three minutes later the attacker, Abderrahman Bouanane, a Moroccan rejected asylum seeker, had been detained. At the time of his arrest, Bouanane was using the name Abderrahman Mechkah, which was subsequently discovered to be a false identity. An Uzbek-born Finnish citizen is also wanted under an international arrest warrant for questioning, but his location is unknown.

In June 2018, Bouanane was found guilty of two counts of murder with terrorist intent and eight counts of attempted murder with terrorist intent. It was the first time anybody had been sentenced for a terrorist crime in Finland. Bouanane appealed the decision in August 2018.

Sweden (of which Norway was a part during most of this time) was one of the biggest powers in Europe from the middle ages until the early 19th century, fighting a series of wars and winning most of them, despite having a tiny population. They decided to pursue a policy of neutrality after the Napoleonic Wars. While geopolitical power decreased, it has resulted in a period of unprecedented prosperity.
