Thanks man. Been cleaning up debris, limbs, branches etc and assessing this morning. No damage to house or vehicles. Sections of both side yard fences down but thats it. Little plastic backyard shed looks untouched. Absolutely gorgeous day today.

Where was the wind sheer?

Did you not see it collapse as it came ashore. Didnt save folks from the wind, bc it was too late. Recon fix went from 959 to 971 in one pass.

Your question is why did the storm hold up so well vs the shear?

Answer is enhanced outflow and thus convective ability due to position relative to the upper level jet.

We definitely got tornados. One looks to have gone down the street. Flung my shed into pieces into my woods. Its super bad on my street then the damage just basically ends abruptly. There's a ton of broken trees but they all broke away from the homes luckily. Given the severity of the weather, there was a lot of good luck it seems. A downed tree actually jammed on top of my neighvors fence post and kept the entire fence from blowing down. Instead, its just leaned over for maybe 30 feet and can be fixed easily.

Well, in hindsight......maybe my advice wasn't the best.

Wait, you didn't put the kids in there to weigh it down, did you? If so, my bad......

I hope the damage isn't too bad and cleanup/repair doesn't take long.

ETA: I also hope the kids did okay with/during the storm.

So about the egret… we were at ~9,500 in the eye and the pilot spots this egret. It’s not so close we are gonna hit it but it does go right in front of us at a slightly lower altitude. I’m busy with the radar and don’t have time to grab my camera but I did have the GoPro Max going. It’s not great footage but you can see the white speck going from right to left. I tell the weather officer he has gotta put it in the VDM for reasons… sure enough ten minutes later there are posts about it here on X.

Overall that was one of the more wild missions of my career… the eye was crazy shaped and closed on the first pass and then open on the second. On the third pass we had a call from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center about a boat with an emergency beacon that was transmitting just outside the eye. We dropped down and searched for them for a bit. That’s all the wind arrows clumped together sorta in the middle. The beacon was loud but we didn’t get any response on the radio or see anything visually or with radar. Coast Guard was headed out in a helo but storm was well north by the time they made it on scene so no idea what happened with that. Then there was a bunch of severe turbulence on the open south side of the eye, clear air with nothing on radar but pilots had to do all their pilot stuff to keep us flying. Took a radar fix because the turbulence was too violent on the fourth pass. Then made it back in for one final fix before calling it a day. Pics and vids tomorrow… Our PA office got a bunch of them up on DVIDs if anybody wants to use them.

Mayor of Brewton Al said they may be looking at 3 weeks or so for power restoration there.

Can you link me to this? My father is currently down there, trapped in due to trees, no power, no internet, limited info he can get. Also, did the city water well pumps also fail? Seems like those should have generator backup.

Looks like downtown Pensacola got smoked.

Crazy how well Gulf Shores and Perdido Key escaped this thing

Yeah just got back from my primary house and either the straight line winds blew trees down one way and back the other when the wind direction shifted or there was rotation.

Kind of tough to say which but with 115mph gusts end result is the same.

Some of the north south access roads to 30A were closed this morning but had opened up when I just drove by again (old blue mtn etc).

Seems like pine forest road/blue angel parkway is the boundary of problems

Everything west of that not much but power out
