Neighborhood safe, generally yes. Do I leave the doors unlocked, no.
Garage door, workshop doors always stay locked unless I am working in it.
Lots of transient workers in the area with the storm cleanup. No guarantee they are all out driving around looking for work opportunities.

The only thing thats broken in my place was a bear.

All of my precautions are geared toward deterring them, not people.

I could and more than likely nothing would happen, but over the past several years there have been unknown heroin addicts who have randomly popped up and I rather not make it easy for them.

Especially with Christmas around the corner. They start off trying to go door to door seeking donations. Then at night they try to break in people's cars. These are not pros because they only get into vehicles that are not locked and I am sure they will try to see if the front door is unlocked as well.

Last time they came around, people called the police on them. It ended up being a group of them all working different neighborhoods, but they are people from not around the area. I think the group that all got arrested was from from someone in Livingston Parish.

Either way, enjoy your great area. That's usually the areas that are good to hit up..

You seem to dislike NOLA, but seem to visit often maybe?

My neighbor leaves all doors unlocked since he installed a multi-camera surveillance system.

He wants to catch a burglar and post their pics online, which you can't do if they can't get in.

He was complaining about gas stations not taking cards in NOLA the day after a direct hit from Zeta.

That's fricking stupid. He can get them on camera trying to break in, but does he really want to be asleep and have some low life go inside his house? There is no telling what could happen if he decides to confront them. It could result in him being injured or him having to shoot someone, that's something I would think you would rather avoid.

Now that the Pelicans won’t have fans or will have limited fans, I have zero desire to visit New Orleans. Been 7 months and counting except for passing through

No neighborhood is safe enough to sleep with the doors unlocked. Are some areas a lot safer than others? Yes, but you never know when or where some whacky shite is gonna go down.

Some criminals (not most) are smart enough to target people who think exactly s you do. Also, psychopaths exist in all economic and social strata.

I bet Sharon Tate thought her neighborhood was safe enough for unlocked doors, too.

We've forgotten to lock them after letting the dogs out and haven't had an issue. We make a point to lock doors almost every night with my 15yo usually doing a check around midnight.

Yes, but we still lock them. After traveling across the country and living/working in sketchy neighborhoods it has become habit.

Meh. Probably have more nights than not over the last 20 years. Still alive and not robbed blind.
