I am not a fan of forced mandates, but I follow data /opinions with an open mind. Below has made me lean towards wearing one when in close proximity to others

Incompetence and Errors in Reasoning Around Face Covering

quote:

SIX ERRORS: 1) missing the compounding effects of masks, 2) missing the nonlinearity of the probability of infection to viral exposures, 3) missing absence of evidence (of benefits of mask wearing) for evidence of absence (of benefits of mask wearing), 4) missing the point that people do not need governments to produce facial covering: they can make their own, 5) missing the compounding effects of statistical signals, 6) ignoring the Non-Aggression Principle by pseudolibertarians (masks are also to protect others from you; it’s a multiplicative process: every person you infect will infect others).

quote:

First error: missing the compounding effect People who are good at exams (and become bureaucrats, economists, or hacks), my experience has been, are not good at understanding nonlinearities and dynamics. The WHO, CDC and other bureaucracies initially failed to quickly realize that the benefits of masks compound, simply because two people are wearing them and you have to look at the interaction.

quote:

Sixth Error: The Non-Aggression Principle “Libertarians” (in brackets) are resisting mask wearing on grounds that it constrains their freedom. Yet the entire concept of liberty lies in the Non-Aggression Principle, the equivalent of the Silver Rule: do not harm others; they in turn should not harm you. Even more insulting is the demand by pseudolibertarians that Costco should banned from forcing customers to wear mask — but libertarianism allows you to set the rules on your own property. Costco should be able to force visitors to wear pink shirts and purple glasses if they wished. Note that by infecting another person you are not infecting just another person. You are infecting many many more and causing systemic risk.

Wear a mask. For the Sake of Others.

the loudest opponents of something as non-threatening as wearing a mask in public for a little while just happens to be the biggest mouth breathers. It is the least optimal combination.

No, it’s an indicator of who is a selfish a-hole and who isn’t.

I can’t think of a more minor inconvenience than putting on a mask for 10 min when I go to the store. It is akin to returning a shopping cart with how inconveniencing it is. It blows my minds how this is being politicized JJ.

I flew into Austin today into general aviation for a 3 day visit with my western region office. One of our managers picked us up at Million Air. About half of the people I have seen in public are wearing masks. I don’t care who does and who doesn’t. Every worker at Deck Hand Oyster Bar had on masks but none of the customers were wearing them. I did get to see the San Francisco style tent city under the overpasses close to the restaurant. Will be traveling around to some of our projects tomorrow (all in the downtown area) and am curious to get a first peak at the Austin that everyone here dumps on. This is my first visit to our Austin office since I started with the company in March. I wore one when I checked into the Hilton but didn’t when we entered the restaurant and didn’t get any looks or any negative vibes. We will see how it goes the next few days.

No.

If I am required to wear one to go somewhere I will. Ex doctors office, work, etc.

That said, if there is an alternative, I will go where I don’t have to wear one. Ex: shopping at Albertsons instead of Trader Joe’s.

It’s a show of respect for the humans around you. It keeps business owners from having to shut down again. It keeps many of us off unemployment. The list goes on and on...
Have mercy!! This country is in a serious bind.

I am so freaking tired of the dozen daily topics bitching about, bragging about, or shaming about masks. We've now experimented both ways and the results are pretty fricking clear. Wear a GD mask. Do I think the media has gotten ridiculous about the whole issue? YES. I liken it to another current issue. Do I think the right thing to do in MS is to change the flag? YES. Do I resent that it has occurred because of whiny college kids/ athletes, BLM, #CancelCulture, and the yankee run media? HELL YES.

My point is that you may not like being told what to do by those outside your communities but the result is ultimately positive. I'm a GenX conservative GOP nominee (MAGA16/KAG2020) supporter...I think climate change is overblown and shade towards isolationism. Even I can look at numbers of mandated masks vs no mandate and put things together that wasting marks is still for the good of our fellow citizens. Now if they keep this up after vaccines are out, I'll be the first one to tell then where to shove it.
