I don't recall my parents ever being sticklers regarding time, but I am. It annoys the shite out of me when my wife is "okay" with being late to things she considers "casual". Because something is "casual" she feels like it doesn't matter what time you show up.
I'm partially on your wife's side here. A hard time would be a meeting, work, anything where you are the host, and appointments. These are "if you're not early, you're late" times. I don't like leaving people waiting.
Then there are soft scheduled times. A party, casual get together, tailgating where you're not the host, visiting with family (where there isn't a meal being prepared.) But usually I make sure to clarify that we'll be there "around 1:00" not "at 1:00." Basically, most times where there is not and will not be anybody waiting for you is a soft schedule. I'm likely not showing up on the dot or early to a BBQ. Personally I rather people come a little later, so I don't have to entertain while trying to make sure everything is ready.

For some of those things, I agree there is no set time. Especially if we're visiting family or something. But if there is a birthday party that starts at 3pm, I'm going to be there at 3pm. Same with dinner at a friend's house, a party, etc...

I expect, along with the service I am paying for, a modicum of respect.
Guess what a-hole...so does every other patient in the waiting room...if YOU are late for your appointment because you don't respect other people's time and the doctor doesn't put his foot down, other people will be late being seen... but I guess you're too self-absorbed to get that's how it works.

who the hell does a doctor
An expert in health and patient care that's who...let me guess..you tighten lug nuts at a goodyear?? cause you come across like that's what you do in your posts

I were your patient and you started that shite with me one of us is going to need a damned doctor for certain...and the police

sounds like the girl friend cancelled because, like most of her generation, she does not have the interpersonal skills to handle a big face to face meeting. So she tries to change to a Zoom meeting where interpersonal skills are not required.
Social media has obliterated an entire generation's ability to relate in person.

He's disrespectful to the doctor and other patients by showing up late, he expects to be respected. What a clown. Insecurities drip from his post.

I can only speak for myself but if I were your patient and you started that shite with me one of us is going to need a damned doctor for certain...and the police. Why the frick would an employee talk to their boss that way??? Would anyone put up with an auto mechanic or a HVAC technician who acted that way toward a customer? Patients are the customer of medical providers...and medical providers are basically mechanics and most of them are not very good mechanics...frick a doctor and them putting their foot down, its a good way for the doc to find a foot up their arse....
If a patient shows up 30 minutes late to an appointment and expects to be seen, what do you think that does to the patients who show up on time? It makes them late. I'm not a provider, but my wife refuses to see patients who show up more than 15 minutes late. She'll have patients scheduled in a 45 minute slot, show up 30 minutes late and get upset because she refuses to see them. She's not going to make the next patient wait 30 minutes because the first patient couldn't show up on time.

Social media era. Too many options to activities, events, and people. Also, too many ways to cancel or let people know you’re running late.
Back before cell phones, you were committed and if you didn’t show there was hell to pay.
That's a great point.

Good post and thread. My rules of thumb has always been to arrive at work/business/meeting related locations far enough in advance to handle introductions and to get ready to start working at the meeting start time. If someone arrives late...what a distraction. At people's residences, I arrive not early, but on time. Often, folks are rushing around their house, putting pets up, cleaning-up, etc., and showing-up early can enhance their stress. If something unforseen happens, give them a call.

I fired 4 employees on the same day for repeatedly being late! When confronted all they ever had to say was “I’m here aren’t I!”

A lower level employee at my company is religiously 15-20min at least 2-3 days a week. Im not her boss as she is not in my department, but her boss is my equal.
Her boss says she is a great employee otherwise so he doesnt want to get rid of her which I kind of understand, but when you are on salary and cant show up on time, something has to happen.
Her excuse is generally that traffic is bad where she comes from. Well to me its pretty simple… fricking leave 20 minutes earlier than you usually do.
Not my problem though, i find it funny.
Is it time-sensitive to start the day at a particular time? Can they stay 15-20 minutes late to make up for it? My profession is more about getting your time in for the week and getting the work done. The start and end times aren't as important if those two are being satisfied.

I hate when patients are late and expect, rather demand, to be seen. I put my foot down.
And I totally understand the flip side of the argument. Most doctors offices have ridiculous wait times. I pride myself on being timely and not making my patients wait. I would rather my patients less wait time and I try my hardest to accomplish this. My notes are second fiddle, I’ll do them later.
That's almost always the case when we go to the pediatrician. Arrive 15 minutes early and then wait 15-20 minutes after the appointment time to be seen. Nothing we get upset about; there's a lot of patients to be seen, but I don't stress myself about being 5 minutes early instead of 15 now.

Had an appointment this morning at 9am. I was there at 8:30. My first stages of an inspection are outside. Owner came out
"Little early aren't we?" "I am a military brat and raised southern as well. If I am on time ...... I'm late."
Then changed the subject ....."Exactly how many cats do have?" She said "Watch this and walked to the mailbox."
20 cats joined her and followed ...

Here is the thing, people who do not respect your time do not respect their time, nor their word, they are unreliable people and are not worth a shite.
