Is This Just A Practice Session For The Real Thing?

Coronavirus mortality rate is very low, around 3.4%, but people are still losing their minds buying up all the toilet paper and the Dow is tanking. Hospitals in Italy and China are inundated and crying for help. I think we're realizing we're completely unprepared for something even this mild. Let's imagine, hypothetically, that this virus had a 90-100% mortality rate for anyone infected, healthy or not and was spreading with no symptoms like it currently is. It would be absolute chaos. Will the superbugs be the end to humanity or will humanity collapse on itself? What happens when mother nature figures enough is enough and it's time for a serious purge?

Explain to me how that is low?
ETA: I'm sure it isn't that high, but even the best outcome so far, South Korea, has a .7% death rate, which is way higher than influenza.

a virus like this with a 90% mortality rate would shut down civilization and would take centuries to recover

Yeah, I'm not sure there is a whole lot you can do to "prepare" for something like that, beyond praying that it lays people out and kills them so quickly that they don't have time to spread it.

I try to imagine the day when that number is like 10%. Just that would be absolute chaos.
It's not 3.5 and if it were, that would be legit. Not a practice. I wouldnt call this a practice, most people can relax.
The smart thing to do though is to observe how other people are acting and take notes on what to do and especially what not to do.
Watch government responses, community etc.

3.4% is the current estimate by WHO as of March 3rd.
