If your name is Tiggrdad it sounds like you have a kid at LSU so you obviously know a lot more about it than I do. But I find it hard to believe that LSU only offers $2500 year if you make a 33 on the ACT.

A home-school girl we know had top schools competing for her for their astronomy/astro-physics programs. They were all offering the full boat...tuition, expenses, apartment (no dorm) generous stipend.

Our daughter sorta got paid to go to LSU...TOPS plus plus. Ans some other small scholarships on top of that. Since she stayed at home, she made a bit of money going to school.

For grad school she got some very generous-sounding offers from schools in the Northeast (Brown, BC, etc) but the costs are so high up there it would have still been very expensive. She stayed in the South and is getting paid...

I keep assuming the state will get their shite together with TOPS, but if they don't and LSU doesn't offer more academic scholarships, I'm pushing my kid to apply to other SEC schools.

Auburn, Mississippi State, and Alabama will definitely beat that if your kid has a 33 on the ACT. Mississippi State would would pay full tuition.

Yes, 2 nephews and 2 of my sons got full academic scholarships to LSU and UNO. Two others of mine had combined athletic/academic scholarships to play baseball at 4 yr D2 schools. I paid about a third for the latter two.

He is still in high school but has always planned on going to LSU. I've looked into scholarships a bit and we attended the campus tour thing they do on Fridays.
A 28 on the ACT gets you $1,500/yr.
30-32 gets you $2,000/yr.
33 gets you $2,500/yr. unless you get one of the full rides, of which there are 10 Stamps and I think 10 President's Alumni.

I know this is an LSU board and a lot of folks dislike Bama, but over the past 10 years they've really stepped up their recruiting of the best and brightest students from out of state with extremely generous scholarships.

Meanwhile LSU is cutting TOPS. I know plenty of smart guys from Louisiana that went to Bama over LSU because of the national merit scholarships they have.

My nephew got a full ride to FU based on academics. You know, that school in Gainesville, FL

My daughter has applied to go there. They will send her a packet on Feb. 10th telling her what they are offering. She is the Valedictorian with a 4.549 right now.

FSU already accepted her but only offered $1900 per semester. The state of Florida has a program similar to TOPS called Bright Futures. They pay $203 per credit hour at her level.

UF is about $2100 for the good meal ticket and $2800 for a dorm, per semester. I am hoping UF steps up bigly.

Yeah, LSU even quit giving full rides for National Merit Finalists. That only gets you another $1,500/yr. Sad.

It is true and it's an absolute joke. Meanwhile kids at other SEC schools get paid stipends and IPads for national merit. LSU gives no incentive for top students to stay in state.

Hurts me to say this, as I have several pieces of LSU "paper" on my wall, but LSU SUCKS when it comes to scholarships. My daughter is a National Merit Finalist (top 1% of students who take SAT), a 35 ACT and >4.0 GPA, etc. LSU offered her $4000.00/yr. She chose a full ride for an east coast school and they pay her. Sad really that we can't keep our brightest here.

Interesting.

I'd like to know how that turns out.

What's she planning to major?

TOPS would have covered full tuition + $800/semester with those grades and scores. Add the $4k a year and many other scholarships she would have been eligible for and I don't understand your argument.

Chem E.

UF is tied for the #43 engineering school.
UCF is #82.
USF and LSU are tied for #100.
FSU is #118. They are lumped in with Florida A&M. It would be like ranking LSU on Southern/LSU's combined scores.

Yes.

My daughter has gotten several offers from schools this year that include all tuition, all dining plans, room, all fees, computer stipend, and "priority interview" for on campus employment if she desires.

Lots of schools bait you with partial tuition but the real $$ is in the FULL scholly.
