Is there any benefit to buying a home vs building or vice versa?

Especially if you live in the country where land is reasonable?

Realtors in my area have lost their got damn minds, jacking up home prices 20 and 30%.

Is there any reason why should I buy someone else’s old home at a price some stay-at-home, old insurance sales realtor dictated and is out of their mind pricing? Especially when considering that I can build a larger, nicer, newer home for the same amount of money?

I’m bitter and poor so I can’t afford a diary.

Yep. I built in the country and got more house for what I could've purchased in the city. Pick your contractor wisely, though.

Build a home if it’s cheaper and you physically can on the land, buy a home if you like it/it’s in an area you can’t build currently.

It depends on which headache you would rather deal with, realtors wanting to get overpaid or contractors not showing up way out in BFE to do the work.

Homes are no different than cars. You have a period pf maintenance free ownership, then that fricker is a money pit. I build every 5-10 years to avoid repairs. I always make 20-30% in equity doing this. Leave the maintenance to the next sucker.

if you dont need a house for 5-8 months build yourself. Save more money if you know what you are doing and contract it out yourself. You have a new home and a home that you got designed for your family. If you buy a house previously owned you can usually add at least 10% to the price you pay for changes like paint, flooring, counter tops etc.

It's all situational. If there is a nice house for sale in a nice location that meets your needs, it would be smart to get this.
But, if you can't find what you want at the price you want, go build something.

Do you have the time, patience, and money to build a home?

I find this hard to believe, and think you may be underestimating the costs of building.

buying means you don't have to deal with contractors and headaches and can move in immediately without having to also rent and waste time. Building means you can customize it. Trade offs for each but have to deal with all of the above.

Buy the cheapest POS house in the area, have a wiring malfunction and burn it down, claim on your insurance and you have a brand new house.

Building a house is a pain in the arse

Realtors only set the asking price, you decide what you’re willing to pay

This can probably also make building more expensive as more and more upgrades / customization get discussed

Also interest rates have been trending up so in 8 months when you’re ready to close on mortgage a 1% increase might negate any savings over buying today

Upvote just for this.

I'm too lazy to go through the process of building my own home, so I just buy old used houses.

You can realize a great savings by cutting out the middle man if possible. You get permits and run the build.

Hire all the subs, work your own deals. Significant savings with built in equity before moving in.

I am adding an extension onto my house. I can only imagine what a fricking pain in the arse this would be.

To op, each has its better options. One thing to keep in mind is that not all construction is the same, and some people do a shite job. Plus construction labor is in short supply across most of the country.

One other thing to consider is that houses that were built a long time ago were often built well.
