I had sympathy for him until this point. It should have never gotten to them garnishing your wages.

Sounds like he is unwilling to take control of any situation and let’s people run over him.

Being old and having massive amounts of debt? At least when you’re young, there’s hope that you’ll pay it off and be able to enjoy life one day. When you’re old and saddled with ridiculous debt, you’re likely going to die poor and destitute.

Also he should get a lawyer for his failed business if he can prove he was screwed over he can sue the accountant and partner and likely get some relief. Sounds like he is bending over and taking it rather than fighting it.

That part smells like BS. It's something people say when they frick up their business. If the accountant and partner really screwed him over, there would be recourse

Of course there are. How about being diagnosed with a terminal disease? Or having a child die? Or being grossly disfigured?

I could name thousands more.

Yeah sounds like he makes dumb decisions brought on by himself.

Wish people would learn, marriage is some serious shite. Either you are going to be happy and make the best of it or you are going to be a broke arse bitch if you have kids. Make a decision based off of that.

Your friend may be intelligent and a nice guy, but he is a poor judge of character judging by the divorce and bad business partners. Being able to read people may be the most important life skill there is.

Being old and in debt is likely much more hopeless feeling.

There are also some non-profit debt counseling services out there.

He lives in a shithole $400/month apartment in a bad area of town just to try and save something. After working all day, he’s pretty handy so spends every night and weekend doing odd handyman jobs for cash so he doesn’t have to eat ramen noodles.

Not trying to be a tubesteak, but he should continue to live as cheaply as possible and still eat cheap even though he has extra coming in.
Do this until that debt is paid off. Maybe it won't take 15 years.

And don't date. He doesn't need to date.

This.

Lots of young people are in debt, but have long term plans to alleviate the burden.

Being close to retirement age and being in massive debt would bring about some serious feelings of hopelessness. Honestly, its a big cause for suicide.

Being told you have stage 4 cancer?

Being a Christian in many parts of the world?

Having ALS in the late stages?

Yes, being told by an oncologist there's nothing more that can be done for you.
