They were morons so i’m not shocked they didn’t recognize a card issued by their own department.

Clearly, I’m pretty sure the TSA is over the TWIC card program. That’s like a truck driver not knowing what a CDL is

I hate to tell you, they don't use a special camera for Real ID. They use the same one as your normal license.

You've opted in to the big conspiracy already.

Everyone should just get a passport card anyways

Cheap and easiest to use/carry ID

I was first informed of this in 2013 and it keeps getting delayed.

Well not really. If what you say is true then unconstitutional government overreach is still wrong compared to voluntarily opting in to permit it

Is it really that surprising?

I’ve heard from multiple people that TSA agents at airports are clueless regarding TWIC, regardless of the fact that TSA/DHS are responsible for the program. I’m not sure how true it is, or if it’s more an urban legend at this point, since Real ID has been “coming next year” for 10 fricking years now.

I digress - it wouldn’t surprise me if TSA personnel seemed clueless because:
1. It’s the TSA, and
2. The TWIC program is really geared toward maritime security. I think they made TSA administer the program thinking it would eventually be used for airport security but it never materialized. The USCG should really administer the program in its current form. C’est la vie.

Where do you live? I thought there were only a handful of states (Louisiana being one) that even allowed you to opt out. I didn’t think Ohio was one of them but could be mistaken.

Ultimately I’m not sure you’re giving up much in the way of rights that you haven’t already lost if you have a passport, TWIC, or any other form of federally-issued identification.

And if you think opting out of Real ID keeps you out of federal facial recognition databases given the well-documented NSA intrusions into privacy of US citizens in recent years. It sucks, but that’s post-9/11 America. Nothing will change unless or until the voting public prioritizes personal privacy rights.

I thought the passport cards weren’t for flights, just for car and water passage to Canada and Mexico.

True. Delayed until 2021. That said, don't wait until the 2021 rush.

No thanks. The last time people had to walk around with gold stars on them it didn't end very well.

For one, you opt yourself into facial recognition shared among any agency. So you when you walk down a street you basically lose your right to privacy with this ID. I’ll just not participate in this.
I, for one, welcome our new facial recognition-using overlords.

I had the non compliant license and when it expired went and got the compliant one. The only thing different is the real id had a little sun looking star in the upper right corner. Didn't have to opt in to anything, no crazy small print disclaimers just a simple ID that signifies you are who you say you are validated by other forms of official government id's

I tried to get through TSA with my TWIC once because I didn't feel like digging out my wallet, and my TWIC and plant badges were hanging on my backpack. The guy had no clue what I was handing him. Ended up digging for the wallet as soon as I saw the utter confusion on his face.

you don't have a right to privacy walking down the street, so you haven't lost anything there.

I’m not sure if it is just shitty language, but does this mean you can’t renew your current ID online and get a real ID designation? Or does it mean that you can’t renew real ID online and keep the designation?

quote:

NOTICE: On October 3, 2016, Louisiana began issuing Real ID compliant credentials. In order to obtain a credential with a Real ID indicator, you must visit a motor vehicle office. If choosing to utilize the internet renewal process, the credential you receive will display the verbiage "Not for Federal Identification". Please visit www.expresslane.org for information on Real ID requirements.

Because if you have to renew your ID in person every single time to keep the real ID designation, that would suck.

Pretty certain it pertains to obtaining it the first time as you have to present proof positive ID in order to get real ID from Louisiana. Birth Cert, Passport, Mil ID, TWIC, etc. Once Louisiana validates from those documents they will issue their version of the compliant ID. I am assuming from that point on it would no longer be required to renew in person, but possible, probably is shitty language in the law books.

They can't get any better at backing that shite up than they are now. Holy shite, I think they have backed it up 3-4 times already.
