Is the position of US Surgeon General still a needed position?

I'm in the health care field, and I dont even know, nor does it matter.

As long as the Surgeon General is competent and articulate, it is a good figure to announce and explain national health policy.

you probably don't know about the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service that he heads...which is one of the eight uniformed services...

Yeah, the Surgeon General is actually an Admiral in the uniformed public health service. Really bogarting the job titles there.
