How much is that same house in Charlotte right now?
I’ll give you a sec if you need to ask your wife
Or you can go the Penrod route and pretend like you have no idea

We’re seeing a huge shift in the economy where people are saving less and less and don’t even really dream of being homeowners. Both of these things will make us worse off in the long run
100%. And I think part of it is because we just aren’t building enough homes in the US since the 2008-2009 crisis. That means less available homes for sale today at a reasonable price for young buyers.
On the other hand, people said the same thing about millennials but most of them turned out okay. Late start but they figured it out.

Answer this simple question, should someone making $120k today be living paycheck to paycheck or should the be able to afford an above average lifestyle?
I knew a couple who each made well over six figures and lived paycheck to paycheck. She had a separate closet for all her shoes; he never saw a boat he didnt to have.

At 6.25% interest, that's pretty unaffordable for the vast majority of young couples. That's about a 3k mortgage. Hell, we are in our peak earning years, and I wouldn't want a 3k mortgage.

It’s not if you cut out Starbucks, ubereats, and Netflix.

Im at around 2200 for mortgage + escrow.
But i got in at 4% in 2022. That's for a 3000 sqft house on 3.5 acres that I got for a steal at 310K and a 5% down payment
Couldn't do it at the current interest rates...and without alittle luck.

That’s why you buy something that’s affordable. It may be a DSLD home but at least it’s not renting. I bought way out and the town developed over the years so things grew up around it and property values went up.

The baseline economy/housing market you were in is different than it is now.
You are now paying way more for that "affordable" dsld home that your going to be stuck in forever because it wont appreciate in value anymore. Its will fall down along with the neighborhood...it's just a big game of chicken at that point...if you can sell it before it turns into an unsellable piece of shite

Why would the average young couple expect to buy a $400k house?

Because that’s what non ghetto houses cost

How old are they(want to know if they bought a home years ago)? Where do they live? How long have they been earning 120k?

Whatever. You’ve been shown starter homes that don’t cost $400k but you’re unwilling to concede your stupid point. So have at it.
