I had the following:
99 e36 M3 silver on dove- drove for 60k miles
2005 e46 M3 competition package white on cinnamon - drove for 105k miles
2010 e92 M3 white on black- drove for 50k miles
the overall size and "luxury" feel increased with each model, and so did repair costs. basically zero issues beyond wear and tear on the e36. e46 had some issues but nothing tops the known rod bearing issue with the e90's that BMW wouldn't recall. spent more on the e92 than the other 2 combined. the e46 was an overall outstanding car. classic look that no one could tell was 12yrs old when I sold it. I can't image how much fun it would be with the e90 v8 in it!!!
If anyone knows how to import the new m3 touring let me know. I'd sell a kidney for one.

Is the E-450 the best wagon you can get stateside these days?

e46 M3 competition package
It is a shame the US got the neutered version without the extra HP and the CF roof but the brakes, steering ratio and suspension were more than worth the extra price for the ZHP package.

Yes those extras made it worth it, except the cost to replace the brakes wasn't fun. the odd thing was that the Comp package deleted cruise control.

I love my 2018 M2 and it's widely considered the most fun BMW being made right now.
I'd take the M2 Competition over the E39 in a heartbeat. Wouldn't have to ask twice.

Is the E39 M5 the last good car made by BMW?
Yes. Maybe the last great production car ever. I was on a kick to get one a few years ago. I wish I had.

Would love an E46 330i or Ci with performance package. Had one from 2008-2013ish. 330Ci coupe with the 6 speed and extra hp. Only 235 but it was a blast to drive.

E46 M3 >>> than any M5.
Wish I never sold mine.

You could come closer to getting away with that statement if you qualified it by saying "any M5 but the E39 M5". You would have many who would take issue with this and a credible arguments could be made in favor of either vehicle based on the criteria used for the comparison. I think it is quite difficult to back up such an absolute statement, particularly if I take the number of greater than signs to represent several orders of magnitude.

You can still find some low mileage ones out there. You're gonna pay though

Speaking of resale;

E39 M5s are far less from a quick perusal. (Yes, they are older)
*Eta-All those at the link are autos. Found a 6 speed for 75K with 50k miles.

I found one locally with a little over 100K for $17,500 about 5 years ago. I was very close to buying but it was Alabama Maroon in color and I just could not pull the trigger with that color.

I’ve been eyeballing the 2023 M340i. Should I stay the frick away?

One of the best cars I ever had.

My E60 has hydraulic steering, a naturally aspirated I6, and a manual transmission. It drives really, really well.
