Now they're all dressing like slobs and the man who dresses appropriately sets himself apart as a man of style and class
Everyone was wearing suits. Nice suits, but still suits. One guy was wearing a tux. I’m sure he though he looked and was regarded as James Bond, but the truth is it comes across more as Jerry Lewis when you are the only one in a tux.

Plenty people with money that don’t give a shite about dress codes.
i'm not really weighing in on suit vs tux for this event, but why do people always default to this in these conversations?
eta: on this website, you usually see it in treads about wedding attire. "wear what you want. the richest guy at the wedding i was just at was wearing jeans and a polo" what does wealth have to do with anything?

Sounds like he was properly attired and the rest of you weren’t. Maybe learn from your faux pas and dress appropriately next time. Then two of you will be dressed right and maybe you’ll start a trend.

Like I said, you might think you are James Bond but you aren’t

This right here.

Has nothing to do with that. It’s about dressing appropriately. You probably wear jorts and a T-shirt to the golf course. Baba booey ! You do you.
I’ll do me and dress appropriately.
I’ll do me and dress appropriately.

Dressing approximately is mainly about matching the culture and decorum of the group at hand. Wearing a suit to an event 99.9% of men are wearing suits is appropriate, and wearing a tux makes you an outlier
Same for dinner parties. A dinner party for one group might be shorts and t shirts, and another group slacks and button downs

People who don't have money or class think that class automatically comes with money

No it isn’t. This is the type of thinking that leads to people wearing jeans to a funeral. Matching the culture and decorum at hand is what teenagers do when dressing for a home coming dance and ethnicities do when attending ethnic gatherings.
Dressing appropriately as an adult at a formal gathering is based on set standards for formal or semi formal attire.
The fact that people have bastardized and marginalized these standards for the sake of their own comfort and laziness is irrelevant.

And why do you simply pick the time period of the early 1900a as “doing it right”? Would they have bastardized funeral attire from the 1700s?

Apples and oranges much? Are those galas? Are they billed as black tie events? Again, you are trying to create a narrative to rationalize your lack of class and laziness. It’s a common trait and indicative of the cultural rot plaguing our society today.

I'll wear a suit to the next Memorial Day BBQ. I'll be the "best dressed", but I'll look like a moron and everyone will think I'm a chode

I blame today's church. Drives me nuts going to church and everyone there dressed like they are at the mall or getting off the golf course with flip flops. With the occasional hootchie mama that still has here Saturday night outfit on. Walking in late with their latte in hand.
Church use to keep people in check, and they aren't.

I've got a tux and a few different colored bow tie and cummerbund combos, and cuff links/buttons, and even the shiny shoes. Something I was told early was important to have in the closest. With that said, going with this look if you have a legit black suit will not faze most people. Just don't wear a colored shirt like a chode, maybe a black one, but stick with white if you just want to be normal. Hell its close to Halloween so it can be used in a few weeks again too. If you don't have a black suit, maybe investing in a normal good black suit can be good into the future. Win- win, maybe even the wife will enjoy the look too when you you tell her you got a wick for her later.

You’re trashy af if you show up to a gala in anything less than a tux. And if you rent it ..
