New Orleans retained more African culture than nearly every other city in the New World because it was one of the few (the only one in America) where the slaves were legally permitted to gather, perform their music, and pass down their oral traditions in public. That gathering place was Congo Square, and that’s where those African rhythms birthed jazz.
Being “African” isn’t about having the largest percentage of people with a lot of melanin in their skin. It’s about being able to bring the language, religion, music, and culinary traditions of Africa wherever you are. New Orleans allowed slaves to retain far far more of their native cultures and identity than did most other places. As a result, more of those native African traditions persisted to blend with the dominant American culture survive in a one-of-a-kind form.

Can you make a proper roux? Who knows they got maters covering it up.
Did my city invent twerking? No, I dont think. But I did get pushed in to a hotwire fence one time.

New Orleans is the greatest city in the world.
It's a Third World shithole. Rotten, decaying, ugly, and full of dangerous, murderous people. But at least it has company in Memphis and Detroit.

And claimed designation is what? Good, bad, indifferent.

I have friends who live in Ghana, Kenya and Botswana. They are socially conservative people who would be appalled that someone is associating "twerking" with African culture.

Priorities I guess... In other news.

NFL won't let Cowboys wear decals supporting Dallas police in regular season
The Dallas Cowboys asked the NFL if the team could wear decals honoring the fallen members of the Dallas Police Department and the NFL, unsurprisingly, said no.
When training camp opened in Oxnard, Calif., earlier this offseason, the Cowboys unveiled "Arm in Arm" helmet decals, designed to pay tribute to the men who lost their lives during the downtown Dallas shooting in July, while also symbolically representing the Cowboys support of the community.
Naturally, the NFL won't let them wear the decals during the regular season.
"Everyone has to be uniform with the league and the other 31 teams," Jerry Jones said Wednesday. "We respect their decision."
It's pretty easy to get upset about the NFL over this. The league has a long history of appearing tone deaf when it comes to letting players and teams support various causes. Brandon Marshall, then with the Bears, was fined more than $10,000 for wearing green shoes to raise awareness for mental-health issues.

This is true for the entire continent of Africa?

I believe it is. It’s not nearly the most African-American city; that would be Detroit, Baltimore, or one of the more fractious cities. In sub-Saharan Africa the people are fast to laugh, fast to cry, and fast to violence, but not into sustained hatred. Islam has pushed many toward sustained hatred, but it’s still not the norm.
