Murders were worse in the 90s, but that was nationwide I believe. The downward trend is nationwide, not limited to Nola or anything the NOPD is doing. Some say it's due to abortion.

But what seems different--and if I'm wrong, fine--is the crime is less concentrated now. I assume Bc the projects are gone. While te city had 400 murders, I rarely heard about so many armed robberies esp in the FQ or uptown. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.

Not be a raging pussy and exaggerate every little issue with the city in a public forum for starters.

the city could find a way to get good people to move there. I feel that is what's holding it back too.
a significant increase in white collar jobs would solve most of its problems imo

Probably because you weren't on the OT in the 90's

This. A lot of city's problems would solve themselves if New Orleans attracted the white collar employers that Atlanta or Houston does.

I'm pretty sure there are about the same number of publicly traded HQs in New Orleans as there is in Lafayette. Which is about eight.

I bet that would help. Anything to get good people to move to the city because nobody is moving there now.

You mean when violent crime was worse?
Correct me if I am wrong, but growing up here, I seem to remember 95% of the violent crimes were in certain areas. Doesn't seem like it anymore

That's pathetic

I know a lot of young professionals & recent college grads who would love to live there but there aren't jobs for them

There's not a chance in hell I'm raising a family anywhere in LA except the NOLA metro. If I find my career & life substantially better off outside of New Orleans, I'll be moving to another state entirely.

To put that into perspective...

Memphis has nearly as many Fortune 1000 public companies as NOLA has total public companies (6 vs. 8/9)

Houston has 500-600 total. I'm sure Dallas and Atlanta are pretty similar.

I don't see how growth is sustainable at the current rates if businesses continue to steer clear of the city.

This. There just isn't anything for me or most of my friends in Louisiana. People who live there take a lot less salary and spend a lot more on private school tuition to live there.

I swear it's amazing how much brush back we get for taking ourselves out of a situation that we no longer wanted to be in from people that are determined to stay. Like its a slight on them. We just want to minimize our association with certain types of people that for now the N. Shore allows. I'm sure at some point public transportation will be allowed in Mandeville and Covington which will then necessitate more apartment complexes being built and some of the same problems will creep across the causeway.

Exactly. You just explained why moving away from trouble is unsustainable.

The north shore is growing right now and it will eventually have all of the things that are on the south shore. As it becomes more self-sustaining, it will have to build housing and infrastructure for the lower income folks who move there for work.

Then, you will have the same problems on the north shore. That's why we need to address the problems instead of moving away from them.

We've already run this experiment before.

Tbh, almost every single girl I've met here in the past five years is a student, teacher, nurse, artist, or in the service industry. A lot of the guys that come down here do construction stuff like heavy equipment sales or CE. The people that have good jobs here are the people that grew up around here.

That's just my observation, so TIFWIW

It has been growing for 30 years and now is not the peak. I suspect the peak has passes. We don't have those problems at this point and really don't need to build affordable housing.

It depends what you mean by "going to shite."

I live in New Orleans and can take a 10 minute in any direction of the house and have a world class meal.

We have property in Central City, what people consider a "bad neighborhood" but have had nothing but hardworking, good people as tenants.

Now, those places with the big giant crosses looming over the freeway.

That, my friend, is where the shite show is.
