Absolutely. Unlike other collectible card games, Magic: The Gathering features multiple competitive and casual formats which utilize older cards. This means that old cards, if they're good, never fully lose their value. They will go up and down as new cards and formats make them more or less playable, but they can certainly be valuable, and there are many online sites which you can reference to get a price on them.

Sports are played by athletes, correct? Does being good at a card game alone make one an athlete?

Are Professional Poker players athletes?
If yes, then Magic players are too. If not, then no.

My future brother inlaw plays Magic, Hearthstone(sp?) and poker competitively. Actually makes a living doing it. He flys to Vegas to play in magic tournaments. I had no idea it was as big as it was.

I've still got my jewelry deck in a box somewhere. Too lazy to look it up but had all the stuff players were crazy for. Time walk, moxes, library, etc.
Probably give to one of my grandkids to buy a car with one of these days if they continue to hold value.
