re: Is John Oliver currently the best journalist in America?

Don't know what's the reason for all the downvotes, but I've been trying to turn everyone I know on to Oliver for the past 6 months. Like it was said before, he really breaks down issues that aren't flashy. He has a very persuasive way of making me give a shite about the infrastructure in this country and the fact that the fine/ticketing systems in local government is raping its citizens. He does that by actually caring about the issues more than most Americans. This is a guy who doesn't take our country for granted and doesn't want his viewers to either.
Have an upvote sir.

John Oliver is fricking brilliant. Left of center for sure, but so what? It helps that he's commercial free and uninterrupted, but he was already good back in the old days on The Daily Show. I just discovered his HBO show a couple of months ago, and I spent an enjoyable weekend watching Season 1.

I'm sure he's a little biased just like everyone other human. That's part of being a human. He's intelligent though and raises many good points.

Not really a fan of the Daily Show, but Oliver's HBO show is great.

Yeah, there are some issues I've disagreed with him, but I have to give him credit that he really does his homework and that I can't disagree with his basic facts. I just occasionally disagree how to respond to these facts.

I don't consider John Oliver a journalist. But his show opens the scabs on many issues that national media [MSNBC,CNN & FOXN] will not touch. I've enjoyed his series over the past year.

especially since he didn't grow up in this country and can't vote.
And his country does the whole how does the vote break down mirror the representative makeup thing so so much better than ours.
Our ingrained two parties win everyone else loses thing is insane.

what's the reason for all the downvotes,
80% haven't ever seen the show and are just stupid.
19% are OT bad assessment
1% actually don't like him.

I'm a big fan of his, but that piece on trans people was far from unbiased.

With the state of our media I consider him and Jon Stewart a new form of journalism. With the Daily Show I am sure they didn't intend for it to be a legitimate power in the news but our media caused that. It is hard not to consider them journalism when you compare them to what we have now.

I didn't say no bias.
I said not much. And far less than any other "news" show.

Last Week Tonight beats the ever living shite out The Daily Show.
I appreciate the stepping stone and he wouldn't be here without that start, neither would a plethora of other people and shows, but Last Week Tonight is on a different field than Daily Show.

Of course it is. It benefits from having a working model already in place as well as less censorship.

I think it's John Stossel, not even close either
eta: I do enjoy John Oliver without question. I just think Oliver is the best satirical journalist. Other than maternity leave I've agreed with him on pretty much everything

His investigative skills are he best IMO. I like him because While I don't always agree with him, I learn about the topic and can generally have a more informed opinion. I think he's funny as shite too.

His piece on the NCAA was so terribly awful and uninformed and his arguments were beyond lazy.
He's too liberal to be the best because in the end it always up coming through in his rants.
