Is it true LSU is going to an open admission policy?

That isn't a smart idea. The entire purpose of a tier system is to preserve the academic standing of a school. It also serves as a benchmark for students to follow regarding their education.

A student who may realize their academic needs are not the best may choose a lower tier school as opposed to a large state university.

How the mighty have fallen. I remember back in 2006 or so when they were claiming to raise the GPA requirement and trying to be a “Tier 1” school. Now we can’t even put a Tiger into a cage. SAD!

Cancel football and use CAF to get TAF’s funding after RICO charges.

Since OP is depriving us of a link... I think he's referring to this:

quote:

In a slap at LSU, a report presented Wednesday to the Louisiana Board of Regents spells out why LSU and other schools are supposed to limit the number of students admitted even though they failed to meet academic standards.

"For the past two decades the Board of Regents has conducted studies on performance with similar findings: there is a direct relationship between student preparation and student performance," the review says.

Students who meet the academic criteria before admission outperformed those who did not "based on every performance measure examined," according to the study, which was done by the staff of the regents.

Last fall LSU admitted nearly double the number of allowed students who failed to meet the benchmarks under what it calls a holistic admissions policy.

A total of 435 students were accepted at the school as "exceptions" to the requirements, or 7.5 percent of the fall, 2018 first-time freshman class.

Under the rules of the regents, LSU was not supposed to allow more than 4 percent of the freshmen class to gain admission without meeting the academic criteria.

Those figures first surfaced last October.

"LSU exceeded the admissions policy in its allowance for exceptions," the report says.

Alexander has defended LSU's practice as a way to boost diversity, admit more students from out of state, who pay much higher fees and still produce a top-flight class.

F King Alexander has been one of the largest disasters to ever manifest within the LSU system. My university just isn’t the same anymore.

I don't have a problem giving somebody a chance. I have a problem with a student loan to a student that had a C or lower average in high school, a student that can't maintain a B avg in college, or a student in a major that won't support him in the real world.

I think the unmotivated and slow should flunk out in the 1st year. 1st year at any U should be a challenge.

This is the real driver. Of course giving preferential treatment to out-of-staters (and foreigners) is directly opposite to a state university's guiding principle, which is to provide a quality affordable education to the people of the state of Louisiana.

But $$$ talks and bullshite walks I guess.

Unpopular opinion: the money we spend on collegiate shenanigans needs to go to our vocational schools. If we pushed trade schools half as much as we did colleges we would have a more productive workforce. I appreciate a liberal arts education in the traditional sense, and it has its place. However, the majority of us need to pursue practical skills (and I'm referring to myself also).

The “diversity monster” keeps eating. We need to starve that thing.

Beware of the half-truths of the keepers of the diversity monster!

Given how many baws want to be at a school like LSU, but academically can't make it-why doesn't LSU create a division of trade schools under the purple & gold banner?

LSU welding
LSU HVAC
LSU plumbing
LSU coding

This would solve so many problems of drop outs, financial stability, & an entire new wave of "alumni" donations.

Yes, you do because what you’re proposing is conditional. They are still on the hook for the loaned money post graduation so it doesn’t matter if they’re an A or a 2.0 student nor an art history or engineering degree.

The problem with trade schools is that everybody says we should push them, yet they turn around and push their own kids to go to college. Self awareness isn’t our strength as a society.

Welp, time to shut down all but 2 Louisiana’s cash cow. All but maybe two universities would be left standing
