Some of the smartest people in history were not even close to wealthy

The smartest and most charismatic guy I’ve ever known can’t hold a job waiting tables. Drugs are bad news.

nice brag baw, advanced degrees certainly don't mean intelligence, they just take time and money.

You think the average intelligence of those with advanced degrees is not significantly different than those without? You're arguing that there is no correlation between education level and intelligence?
That there is a straw man, a common logical fallacy round these parts. OP didn't say that there was no correlation, only that an advanced degree doesn't automatically equate to above average intelligence, however that's measured. I would absolutely argue that time and money play at least as great a role as "intelligence".
Example, one of my aunts has 4 kids. Three of them are medical doctors. Is this because they were born with a ton of natural intelligence? Or is it because their dad is a doctor who was able to pay for them to attend top private schools from the time they were in kindergarten through high school, as well as pay for their entire college education so they didn't have to work through college? And invested tons of money into ensuring they were healthy, involved in lots of extracurricular activities, a was able to use his contacts to ensure they were admitted to medical schools and other programs of their choice?
If they had grown up in some average family, going to regular public school, I highly doubt they would have all ended up doctors.

quote:I would say they were likely born with above average intelligence, and they’re father had it as well since they’re all physicians, although their profession is an outcome not THE outcome of that. And whether they went to public or private school, it doesn’t change that.
Is this because they were born with a ton of natural intelligence? Or is it because their dad is a doctor

I know a ton of successful folks with advanced degrees (both doctorates and masters, myself included) who listen to hip hop. But, I suppose that we're all unintelligent because of that
the fact that you brought hip hop into this conversation tells us all we need to know.
srsly, like it matters either way. /sigh

I’m assuming you missed his initial thread that this was a spin off of. I would also assume that your assumptions about myself and my friends are completely off-base

My biological father was but he was also a piece of shite

By asking this question, it could be assumed you think that rich people are intelligent and I can tell you this. That would not be accurate at all.. Because I know a few dumb fricks who are lucky to be from rich families, otherwise they would be pissing in a pickle jar under the interstate.

You don't think the way this is written

implies that above average intelligence is not the primary factor in getting an advanced degree?

Lots of smart people fall to drug addiction - usually a lot to do with some sort of self medication / depression type thing.
It really is crazy. Smart people love drugs.

One of my closest friends is off the charts intelligent, and highly educated, but without the assistance of his wife and a couple of others he would be found starving under a bridge in a short period of time.

Telsa dies almost destitute because he wanted energy to be fro for the masses not the artificial property of a few who monopolized it and reaped great profits from the working class.
Of some of the most intelligent are the most poor because many of high IQ also ahem a high sense of altruism and the good of their fellow man.

Yep. I would say being smart and ethical is not a good recipe to build wealth. It is a good recipe for a comfortable and rewarding life though.
