The better solution is to skip the window unit and get an indoor portable unit.
I have never been impressed with the portable units.

Here's a little work around:
Cut a hole in the roof of your car.
Attach flex duct to the hole in the roof of your car.
Put the other end of the flex duct through a window in your house.
Drive your car with the AC on and the windows closed. The cool air will flow through the flex duct from your car's AC into your house.
If you DRIVE FAST ENOUGH, you won't burn any gas, and you will cool your house for free.

the hot air blowing out of the back will void the cold air coming out the front

Just buy a portable AC unit that has a hose that vents out the window. Or you can cut a hole in your wall and install a port that your portable units exhaust hose can connect to.
Here's a pic of Hammertime with his portable AC unit venting through a wall port.

Doesn't a window unit use the condensation water in the pan to help cool it also? That would make a mess inside.
I have a portable one and it's fine for a room. Like said it's still kind of a pain. But when my AC flaked out that R2 unit did just fine cooling the room.

Don't let these people lie to you- Yes you can just put it in the room, its called a window unit so that it doesn't take up valuable space in the room, but if you're ok with it taking up more space then its fine. it actually is more efficient because it won't be outside in the heat.

What if you just put the unit on a small table or something and run it like that without installing it in a window? Is there any reason you can do that besides the window unit taking up more space the room it’s

I run my generators inside but just sleep outside. Beats having to protect the generator from weather.

This cannot be a real question

Ours is really inefficient. The exhaust tube gets really really hot. But it did get us through Beryl for a few days by cooling just the bedroom.

You don’t have window units at your place?

I was just thinking that it’s a royal pain in the arse when a hurricane knocks the power out and you have to install window units in your windows
It literally takes 4 minutes

The heat and humidity has to go somewhere bro. Outside is the preferable location I’d think

OP was one of those people who sat in high school science class constantly asking "Is this on the test? When are we ever going to use this??"

I got this far and thought the next step was going to be “attach the other end to your tailpipe.”
