Is it legal to have a full time job and a consulting company at the same time?

Don’t normal employee contracts prohibit such actions?

Depends. I know several people who do consulting on the side. I have one friend who had a full time tech job where he worked from home. It only took him 20 hours a week to complete his work so he took another job doing the same thing. Wound up working a 45 hour week and getting paid for two jobs.

I don’t believe employee contracts (assuming someone even has one) dictate laws. Now you might get your arse sued, but that’s the risk you take.

Depends. I believe your primary employee can require you to disclose info on a second job.

Due to conflict of interest or decline in performance in primary job.

Not sure tho.

Was like that at my job. Did some work and corporate training for a consulting firm here in town a few times.

Most people don’t have employment contracts.

It can be against the terms of employment that most people don’t read. Just go read your company policies.

I’m the case of my company, any side business / boards / etc would be an “outside activity”, which would need to be reported and approved.

My older bro is a CPA, he has all kinds of stuff going on in addition to being a CFO. His outside work doesn't compete nor conflict with his daily job.

In my line of work you couldn’t do it(construction)… conflict of interest I’ve been told… but hell that could be the man just holding us back

The general language is, “You cannot have anything outside of your current employment if it affects your performance”.

I would be cautious about asking your direct manager or their boss. Most managers, and especially managing owners, have this strange reaction like you owe them 40. So they’ll try to invent additional responsibilities outside your actual job description. You don’t owe them that. But it can become contentious and toxic. Just let them think you working 40.

As long as there are no conflicts of interest (I.e stealing clients, providing confidential information, etc), no employer will give a shite.

I work client side estimating and cost control. Half the people I work with own estimating consulting companies and does work on the side for companies outside our specific industry. We’re a large company with very strict HR policies and they haven’t batted an eye about it.

Only time I have seen an issue is when there was proprietary technology involved. Working a side gig in the same industry would have created a conflict of interest.

They can tell you what not to do, though, and that’s compete with them.
