Ohtani has treated me well the past few years since I got back in. I would buy singles of all time greats vs ripping packs if you care about retaining value. All the all time greats are increasing in value right now.
Also, Fanatics has invested a ton of money into sports cards since buying Topps, and now that Topps has taken over the licenses for all three big US sports I don’t think the momentum in the hobby stops any time soon.

No. I had cards from the 1990s and early 2000s and last year I decided to get back into it. It didn't last long because its a bunch of bullshite now. I had a 1 of 5 Paul Skennes card. It was a card that wasn't licenses by MLB but are popular.. But the 1 of 5 is a bit deceiving. They have a bunch of 1 of 5s of him, its just that each one might have him in the away uniform, then the home uniform. So you will have a player in which there are a lot that only have 5 of that card, but there are a bunch of different versions of the same card.

I have a ton of early 90s cards that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Jordans go for a few dollars on eBay. Maybe Ken Griffey Jr as well. The rest you have to sell in bulk. Even Shaq rookies aren’t worth much.

The problem with the late 80s-90s is the overproduction of a single base card. There were no variations or serial numbered cards like there are now. The base card everyone else that collected also had is in fact not worth hardly anything now unless it has been graded and grades well. PSA 10 copies of those common base cards of Jordan, Griffey, and the Shaq rookies are worth hundreds to thousands now due to condition scarcity. The cards were very common so the base cards in less than perfect condition are not valuable. Very rare inserts of the right players from that era are worth money regardless of condition.

I feel like if your selling a card... They will go pawn stars rick on you and say the corners are busted. But, if your buying the same card, it will be priced sky high. u will never win

Like all other things, much of it is over-produced today. If you are speaking of sports card collecting for instance, some of the newer, rarer cards sell for obscene amounts of money. Personally, I would focus more on the older years (pre-1980) before the card companies MASS PRODUCED the quantities.
I would not recommend card collecting as a large portion of your investment strategy. Also, do not rely on it to make a profit (at least not in the short term). As others have said, if it interests you, and might be a form of entertainment, go for it, but with limitations.

I collect entirely vintage (Google stock—blue chip) if you want to look at it that way. New shiny product is your turn and burn investments.
I do it to keep and then hand down to my boys.
I love the hobby and with me being a fan of history it just makes me happy.
I have some decent stuff from 33 Goudey Ruth to a vast collection of Mantles…just not the 52.

This is the problem grading has solved. A non involved third party has weighed in on the condition of the card making it more liquid and moveable as both a buyer and a seller. Especially with the online sales where the card is not even in the potential buyer’s hand.

From what I've seen, only a small percentage of the people collecting make money off of the cards that they buy. It's hard to find good deals right now. It is a gamble but you must do research in order to know what is hot and selling and what cards are not.

If you do it because you enjoy it, it's worth it. If you're expecting to make money, you'll probably be disappointed. That goes for any kind of collecting, including watches. Hearing talk about whether a watch holds its value sets my teeth on edge.

My buddy has been trading and collecting for a long time. Has a nice large collection. Said he is getting out of it and looking for a buyer for the whole collection. I asked him what he is wanting to get. I figured he’d say $40-$50 thousand and be a little hopeful with $25-$30 thousand being realistic.
