Well, I admittedly have not lived in a large metro area for years and have lost touch with what the market would be in those areas.

I could see that being an issue for a company only offering 15.00 in that situation.

Serious question.

What does a 1 bedroom rental in a non dangerous neighborhood cost in Houston? It can’t be much less than 1500

When I was living there(2019), you could be in City of Houston with a 1/1 for 950/mo. 950/mo was not a nice apartment with functional appliances. AC was questionable, heater non existent, communal washer and dryer location. But it was in a usually safe, quiet area. There was one negligent discharge incident by another renter while I was there, but theft wasn't an issue.

A dime less than that sent you to a potentially unsafe neighborhood, somewhere so far outside the city commuting was a nightmare, or both.

One that I want to be able to afford his own reliable vehicle and gas to show up for work every day. And one that I want focused on the job instead of shopping around for a new one every day.

tOT: inflation is driving prices of everything to the stratosphere. Damn near everything is 30-50% more than it was a few years ago. If you didn’t get a big raise this year you are poorer than you were last year.

Also tOT: People demanding more than 15 dollars an hour for manual labor are out of touch. That’s a great wage.

Wait, so you'd rather take on all the expenses and still only make $15/hr than work for somebody else?

It's also possible that they're not pussies like previous generations and are willing to stand up for better pay.

Automation Automation Automation

Eliminate the need for unskilled, unintelligent labor.

That or eliminate welfare.

Thanks, but as with most things you get what you pay for. Good help is not hard to find.

Yeah, theyre brilliant. Zero pay to make a stand instead of pay and benefits. Then they'll bitch about money.

Never would have happened without the government printing machine and eviction deferral.

exactly

also, tigerdroppings is where people bitch incessantly about what's going on in this country (not necessarily wrong to do so) but if someone talks about about how it's actually affecting their life they're just a bitter poor person or something

Correct. 950/m was just rent. Had to pay extra for
Water(30/m
Electric (an easy 100/m just to keep it reasonable)

Groceries were an easy 350-400/m and yes. I ate the frick out of ramen, rice, and beans.

Overall, I was making 72k/yr, living as frugally as I could, and had enough going in to still appreciate living in Houston and save some.

But I wasn't balling out of control like I was lead to believe 72k/yr would be.

I elected no roommates because that's the only way to really ensure you're not going to get stuck paying everything for two people because as others have stated, when you're young, you're dumb and people lose jobs, miss payments, etc etc all the time

The company I work for is hiring an entry level position in their Houston area warehouse. It's a picker/puller position. Only high school degree required. No experience necessary.

Starting salary begins at $15/hr but candidate could negotiate for more depending on experience.

Benefits offered on Day 1 are 3 weeks PTO a year(it accrues from Day 1), Health insurance(medical/dental/vision), 401k with 6% company match, $300 fitness reimbursement annually, stock purchase option at 15% discount and at lowest price of the year, annual bonuses, big employee purchase discounts on cars(we have fleet purchasing prices with Chevy, Toyota, and Ford), HP computers, cell phone plans with At&T, etc etc

It's a good company in the medical field that isn't going anywhere.

OP thinks people are "out of touch" for not wanting an entry-level, $30k salary job w/ benefits. Gets about 350 upvotes. & this thread goes for 35+ pages. I don't understand the debate.

"Something" being an 18y/o likely still living at home, taking a job w/o training or experience and earning $30K the first year w/ benefits. The OT says anything less than $40K/yr is "poverty level". By comparison, $30K is higher than Median HouseHold income in Italy.

In terms of MEDIAN individual income in March 2021, here are the facts: (PPP)\

10 Countries with the Highest Median Income, March 2021 (PPP, Current Int$):

Luxembourg - 26,321
United Arab Emirates - 24,292
Norway - 22,684
Switzerland - 21,490
United States - 19,306
Canada - 18,652
Austria - 18,405
Sweden - 17,625
Denmark - 17,432
Netherlands - 17,154

Us median household income is like 65k and IIRC median personal income is around 45k. Not sure what that 19 represents

why would he do that when he can easily make more somewhere else? or make about the same amount in a much easier job? you cant just set a low wage and expect people to line up to take it because they're young and it "should" work for them.

30 hours a week at target making 22/hour is more than 40 hours a week making 15/hour (doing actual work).

Yes but you’re not factoring in the health insurance! You know how much 18 year olds care about health insurance!

I'd rather make $22/hour over $15/hour. That's an extra $14k a year. Easy choice for me. Pay your employees better.
