Surely you have an annual maximum. Most of those plans will cover a max of 1k a year with at least a 50 deductible and limited number of cleanings.

If you needed a root canal you are most likely to go well over that 1k and pay out of pocket a good amount for your year. Dental Insurance is a shell of what it once was.

So if all you need is cleanings you are likely paying $230 a year for someone to be able to give you $1k if you need it . Makes sense for an individual. But when you have a family that jumped to $870 a year for $1k for each individual.

Here's a pro-tip.

Never see a general dentist with the following...

1- large home in the nicest country club community unless he's driving a Buick - if he and his wife trade in BMWs on the reg...fire that dentist
2 - nicest office in town in the nicest neighborhood - who's paying that rent
3- the fanciest gadgets and equipment in town - again - who's paying for that

Not this shite again.

What if the dentist buys technology that is payed for by a shift in the balance sheet? Instead of paying a lab bill, he simply uses that lab bill to fund the purchase of technology.

What dental school rejected you? You obviously have an axe to grind.

I get a "free" cleaning every year. It's technically not worth it because I never have cavities or need a root canal

It's funny how you don't give your dentist any credit for this at all.

I just dont feel dental insurance covers enough. I want to say my plan only covers like half of a root canal or a bridge. You can still be on the line for thousands. I pay for it, but I'd pay more if I can have a $1000 max out of pocket per year like i can get with my medical.

dental insurance is pretty reasonable, I had a lapse in coverage in my company insurance for a couple of months a while back and got coverage through BCBS for about $60/mo.

Why should the dentist take credit for not needing fillings or root canals? Obviously, this poster has habits that are consistent with not getting cavities and if he didn't, one cleaning a year would not immunize him from cavities.

This is the problem with dental insurance, it is not insurance in the classic sense, but it is a benefit that helps pay for dental needs.

Would you be willing to pay medical insurance rates for dental insurance, I bet not.

Let's see, bi-weekly check with $16 premium x 26 checks = $416/yr in premium. It cost me $120 for cleaning/checkup which I get once a year. Im not a jackass and I actually brush my teeth twice a day so I have never had a cavity, nor will I ever. No, it is certainly not even close to being worth it for dental insurance for me.

It's worth the $15/month I pay through the group plan, if only for the pre-tax dollars I get to use through the HSA.

I pay about $5 twice per month. All 7 in my family get two cleanings, xrays, etc per year. Obviously worth it.

I have no idea the cost of procedures though, we've never had anything done knock on wood.

But dental costs are no where near the cost of medical costs. I paid $9 a check for dental and like $27 a check for medical (I had pretty great insurance through my company, now that I've got a family plan it's sky rocketed). So that says that medical expenses should be 3x's the cost of dental, but that's not the case. The biggest procedure I'll have for dental is going to run like $6,0000. The biggest medical expense I'll incur is going to be a lot higher than $18,000. And the dental won't even cover all of the $6000, just 50% of it. That's crappy insurance to me. It's not insurance, it's a coupon book that gives you discounts on procedures.

My max is around 2000/yr. I've had like 4 different root canals/crowns over the years since I got this plan 8 years ago with my work.....never had to pay more than $200-300 out of pocket for them. But yeah....I think there is a $50 deductible though.

From what i understand, if your teeth are in good shape and youre just making the bi-annual check-ups, and all your high cost dental procedures (braces, wisdom teeth removal) are behind you, then you are probably best off just paying by visit at full cost.
