Is dental insurance worth it? / High cost of services

Is it worth it to get dental insurance? For those of you that bought it outside of an employer plan who do you use?
My dentist is over $200 for a cleaning/checkup. My wife and I go every 6 months so that is $800/yr before we even hit anything else like cavities.

Mine is through work and is something like $15 a month. Definitely worth it for me.

Same except mine is with Metlife dental
Cleanings/xrays included in coverage. Most everything else covered at 80%. Def worth having it when you need to have a crown and root canal and end up only having to pay $200 out of pocket for it.

Do not buy individual dental insurance unless you are going to use the network of the company you choose.
Network discounts are part of the value of dental insurance. 36% discount is part of why you pay the premium. If you don't take advantage of that, pay cash.
If we are talking about a group policy it's just a tiny bit different depending on whether or not your company pays any portion of the premium.
I tell my friends starting companies to pay cash in the beginning until they can afford a group policy for their employees unless they are going to use the discounted network of dental providers.
Ask away if you have other questions.

$12 a month I think for Metlife and my regular dentist visits are free.

I get a "free" cleaning every year. It's technically not worth it because I never have cavities or need a root canal, but if that ever happens, I'm going to be glad I do. Premiums are based on the fact of not being worth it most of the time. You pay for it based on the fear of something major. There is a reason insurance companies are so profitable.

What do you consider "so profitable"? I've often wondered why anyone would want to start an insurance company because the margins are so low. We celebrate 4% margin and rarely get it.
A guy that rents an office from me gets 35% margin on his sales of industrial equipment.
Insurance companies are only so profitable because of volume.
Besides, don't you want your insurance company to be profitable in case you need them to pay a claim down the road?

Right? My total out of pocket is $180, I'm sure a cleaning is ~$100 and I go twice a year, so it pays for itself.

The code for cleaning isn't a scam. The scam is when you are told you need a deep cleaning and they bill for a root planing and scaling when you don't really need that service. There actually isn't a code for "deep cleaning". It's how they trick you.

Every dentist I've ever gone to has eventually gone "rogue" and started doing shite that doesn't need doing. They go into the professional well intentioned and then they start seeing how easy it is to fleece the average idiot and it's game on.

Here's a pro-tip.
Never see a general dentist with the following...
1- large home in the nicest country club community unless he's driving a Buick - if he and his wife trade in BMWs on the reg...fire that dentist
2 - nicest office in town in the nicest neighborhood - who's paying that rent
3- the fanciest gadgets and equipment in town - again - who's paying for that
Yes, some people don't mind paying more and get the good feels from fancy "gold plated" dental office. They also get good feels from a Rolex. That's fine.
I've fired several dentists because they don't know what I know and try to cheat me, well, actually try to defraud the insurance company and cost me more money in the process too. The guy that never bought in to the fancy stuff and just takes care of his patients are the ones I seek out. Mine just retired but the young lady that bought his practice is a very unassuming ex navy dentist that doesn't try tricks either. Well, she does try to sell me on adult fluoride but that will never work now that they know who I work for...
