If you used Brazilian, I bet there would have been no issue, so it makes you wonder if them calling you out was just to mask their own racist views. Hmm...

Because it seems like he was describing a legitimate style of play that is associated with the country. I'm willing to assume that if you are familiar with soccer then this association is understood. His phrasing might sound racist to people who aren't as familiar with soccer when it really isn't. I'm just taking his word for it though because I'm not that familiar with soccer.

This is like calling the Sicilian family of chess openings racist against the Sicilians.

No. Your family are pussies and you need to slap the shite out of them

Seriously, if the context was as you describe, I don't see any problem with it at all. It might sound a bit racist out of context, but that's just your pussy family refusing to give in because they have an offense-boner.

First, Brazil is not a Hispanic country.

Second, come up with better descriptors.

Number One, Mexicans are great soccer players.

This shows a complete ignorance of the sport.

That's like saying Lithuanians are great basketball players.

We are equal opportunity haters on my hill. We say the n word a couple hundred times a day, call Mexicans all the slang terms. Same with the gays, Polish, etc. but we also despise white trash and call them names that I won't say on here.

Well...to be fair, you didn't say, hey, Jorge is a Mexican. You said Jorge plays soccer like a Mexican. I think it's dumb, but it's all about the context.

It doesn't really bother people of Nicaraguan descent to be called Mexicans that I can tell. They just assign the stupidity where it is due. They also don't mind being called Americans.

I was just informed by my family that I was racist by saying a soccer midfielder on our team played his position like a Mexican was a racist comment

Your family sounds like a bunch of politically correct, butthurt liberals.

The best thing you can do is tell them to frick off and find a new family.

If you were using it as an insult then yes if not then how is it different than calling someone an American?

My mother in law gets mad at me when I call her a mexican, but thats probably because she is from Panama (and she is actually Greek). I guess she has a point.

Insane or not, Mexicans consider it an insult to call people from South America, Mexican, as they consider people from South America to be lazy and dumb. It would be like calling a black man, white, in our society.
