90% of time it is a dog that has escaped a fence and the owner isn't around.
Then you will have to go to the neighborhood facebook page and post a picture of the dog shite and the fuzzy picture of a dog of some sort. Make sure to leave two to three paragraphs about the irresponsibility of letting the dog shite in your yard. Make sure to mention you have small children that are too dumb to not pick up shite, or that you pay a fortune in landscaping and yard maintenance.
Good luck. My neighborhood has a club that meets to discuss dog shitting episodes.

Why does it matter? It's someone else's dog's shite in his yard. It's wrong. We play in our yard. Whether your dog takes AAA batteries or D batteries really doesn't matter. If it's your dog, the dog's shite is your problem not everyone else in the neighborhoods problem.

What are you gonna do about it OP? You gonna track them down and move the shite to their lawn? Go shite on their lawn yourself? Burn their house down? Frick the wife? Arrange an angry mob on Nextdoor?

There's someone who lets their dog(s) shite all over the sidewalk in my neighborhood. We call him/her the Phantom Shitter. My neighbor bought cameras to catch this bastard. So far, no luck.

Cameras are awesome. During Hurricane Harvey, some stupid b*tch kept dropping her dog shite on my lawn (in bags) so I pulled up my cameras to find out who it was and collected 12 from my yard and my neighbor's yards. (Yes, her dog must have an issue)
Took all 12 bags to her house and rang the doorbell. When she answered the door, I said "you forgot these" and dropped them and walked away.
Haven't seen one since.

My house is on a corner lot at the end of a street where the bus picks up school children (no pics).
There is more than sufficient room to stand on the sidewalk and wait for the bus, but a group of five children with there mothers stand, play, and sit in my yard each morning, then the mothers stand in my yard and wait for them to get home (no pics)
I now have my sprinklers set up to go on in the morning and afternoon during bus pick up and drop off times.
Its hilarious..

I didn't buy cameras, but I did bust someone a few years back. I had the front yard all the kids on the street would play football on. Flat and descent sized, I'd get home from work and there would be 5-10 kids regularly playing ball with my kids. One day I notice a huge pile of crap on my lawn as I leave for work, gigantic. I grab the shovel and move the poop, so kids wouldn't trip on the boulder-sized turds. Next day, same thing. WTF? This goes on for a week or two. I pattern the piles and figure out the perp is hitting between 6:30 & 6:50 AM every morning. I sit watching in the window and sure enough, here comes some dipshit with a German Sheppard. I wait for the dog to start and I bust out the front door and confront the guy. I let him know my displeasure with the situation and he was kind of an arse. I waited for him to clean up the mess and he never stopped by again.
I tried to figure out where he lived, but he never hit my block again.
