I'm not mechanically inclined and have never done things such as change my own oil. Now that we're in the information age, I'm somewhat able to get things done (when absolutely necessary) via youtube but probably much slower than the average man.

Now that I'm in my 40s, I'm sort of surprised that I've gotten this far without any negatives from being a girly man in some areas.

but why do you need to be able to change your oil? It's like $40 and takes ten minutes.

I think you're missing the spirit of the statement. Yeah its forty bucks and you don't have to worry about taking old oil to a disposal facility (a true baw dumps it into the lake, I know)...I'm with you, pay the $40 and let jiffy lube do that shite.

But I think you need to at least know HOW to change your oil even if you have others do it for you.

I mean I could google it and figure it out. I’ve changed oil on construction equipment so I can get it done

I work on my own stuff and always build my own buildings/furinture/etc. It doesn't carry much if any weight these days. These tricks aint impressed by anything except looks and money. Fortunately I have both of those in abundance as well. All these mafukkas buying them shite and taking then on fancy dates are screwing it up. I aint the one though

I'm not mechanically inclined at all; but I can find YouTube videos to instruct me every step of the way when I need help, so my wife thinks I'm good at fixing things

Depends on where you live and how much money you have/make.

For example, if you live in a condo with one or more full time maintenance people it is not necessary at all. This would be me. Few months ago sink got clogged. When I got to work, 30 second call to maintenance guy to fix it, was fixed when I got home - no charge.

As another basic example, changing a flat tire. I had a flat last year on I-95. I have triple A. I called the road rangers which service I-95 24 hours a day and triple A. Road Rangers got there first between 5 and 10 minute, called and cancelled the triple A call. Took dude 5 minutes to change the flat.

Have any of you made it through life just fine without being super mechanically-inclined?

So, again it depends on where you live and whether you can afford to have someone else do mechanical work. I'm not particularly mechanically inclined, but I'm not inept either. I've wired stereo stuff, assembled all types of furniture, done landscaping including installing irrigation, changed over a dozen flat tires in my life, stuff like that.

But, with where I live now and the fact my time is worth more than what I can pay someone to do mechanical work (both from a perspective of what I make and how much my free time means), it makes zero difference whether I am mechanically inclined/capable or not. Doesn't make me any more or less of a man either way (or get me laid any more or less).

I usuall fix things myself, because I know it's done right. 50 percent of professionals do a shitty job.

Im pretty handy but im also cautious not to overestimate myself

example:

I want a 20x12 shed in my backyard

instead of paying $5000+ for someone to build it for me, im considering just spending the roughly $1000 on building materials and doing it myself

but I also dont want it to fall down on my children and kill them

these are the things that i weigh

What about dudes like myself that are electrically inclined?

Can fix computers / build networks / etc.

We're moving away from mechanical things faster than you think.

However, I believe as a man, if you cannot change a flat tire you shouldn't be given a license.

If you are a guy and cannot do this, unless you have a physical handicap that prevents it, you should not be allowed to drive a vehicle on public roads nor reproduce.

I would say that everyone (men and women) should be able to change a tire, check your oil, and tire pressure.

Its called being responsible.

Depends. I'm good with construction type work. Other people are better with engines.

I wasn't even slightly mechanically inclined until I was 15. It was like a switch flipped.

Went from being unable to do an oil change to being able to rebuild an engine.

Women like men who can carry heavy shite and fix anything.

But they never do because that’s what money is for.

Example - the engine of my plane was having issues. Could I have fixed it myself? Sure, in 45 minutes flat. But that’s why Greg is on the payroll.

Every man should be able to do at least basic maintenance. Change/rotate your tires, change the oil, change filters, etc. Basic shite.
