I’ve heard conflicting reports about aspartame and its effects. Some say it is terrible for you and kills your body slowly in multiple ways, and others say the negative reports are exaggerated, that it is a suitable alternative to sugar. I am a Type II Diabetic and, for the most part, when I want soda and flavored drinks, most of my options contain aspartame.

So what say the OT on Aspartame?

Just keep your soda intake limited, diet or otherwise, and you'll be fine.

Good studies are a bit inconclusive but show it's not really "bad for you."

My personal opinion is you probably shouldn't put something in your body they make in a lab so I try to limit artificial sweeteners

I know older guys in great health that have spent their whole life drinking 2-3 diet cokes a day minimum.

I pretty sure every zero calorie sugar substitute study shows much more correlation and not causation when it comes to health effects.

So the jury is still out.

Well, I know it affects the nerves. I had read that many years ago but didn't believe it. Now I have ringing in my ears constantly, but if I accidentally eat or drink anything with aspartame in it, my ears will ring very loudly. Loud enough to where I cannot go to sleep.

I think it tastes bad and I try to limit my consumption of lab made “artificial” things. I essentially gave up sodas two years ago, anyway.

If you like having a heart that beats, then stay away from aspartame. I swear, "Sugar Free" does not mean it is any healthier for you. How about avoiding sugar and sweeteners altogether? Drinking water is better for you and helps you shed your fatness.

Not everybody tolerates and processes stuff the same way.

This. I had an aunt who, when diet drinks first became really popular, went from drinking maybe 1 or 2 regular sodas a day to 7 or 8 diet drinks. I will never understand why some people thought that was okay or in any way healthy. "All things in moderation." is actually pretty good advice.

In large amounts, almost anything is bad for you. But I think we know how bad too much sugar is for you, so I'd take my chances with the alternatives. Stevia is one that seems to be on the safer side so far.

If multi billion dollar corporations are putting something in your coke and it’s killing people or destroying people’s bodies....

Wouldn’t have we heard about lawsuits every day now since they started using aspartame suing them for knowingly putting something that kills people in their product?

Easier said than done. I like water and drink a good bit of it, but some meals just aren't as enjoyable when you're drinking water with them.
