The OT in a nutshell in this thread

People who have never done 100's of push-ups at one time "this should be easy for any high school athlete what's the big deal kids are pussies"

Not to mention the article mentioned a kid getting sent to the hospital with rhabdo. You can't exactly fake that

Do the “that’s not that bad” crew realize that’s not all the exercise they did. Sure in a vacuum by itself the push ups aren’t that bad. But I’m sure they lifted at some point, ran at some point, and practiced at some point. That combined with the push ups and holding out water is a recipe for disaster hence the kids bodies literally breaking down

The lawsuits are going to be brutal for this school.

Fire this fricker. Using 400 pushups in an hour as some kind of teachable punishment is ridiculous.

This dipshit is too dangerous to stay in coaching.

its 7 pushups a min.

there should be no muscle fatigue.

So much to address here.

1. They weren't doing 7 pushups a minute so your entire premise is wrong before you even got started
2. You would absolutely get muscle fatigue doing 7 pushups a minute for an hour

no, overkill and dangerous....get the frick outta here.

They got rhabdo dude, you have to be messed up for a long time to get rhabdo, and the coach is an idiot.

You may can EMOM 7 pushups for an hour, although it would be way harder than you are leading on, but that's not what they were doing.

I can squat 135lbs for 100 reps in an hour, but I can't do 100 reps in 3 minutes. Time under tension and recovery matter.... a lot, and you conveniently ignored those to put on your Billy Badass routine.

but how is 400 push-ups in an hour extreme

Doing a push up every 9 seconds for an hour straight. I’m sure 99.999% of people would be struggling by minute 10.

I've heard of kids being denied water as well before

Right, since now its pretty much "if you feel like you need to drink, stop and drink" its stupid for the coaches who do this, to do this.

Not allowing them to drink water could actually make things worse for players long term. If they have a heat stroke then your body becomes more vulnerable and it doesn't take as much to have a second one.

I guess Bear Bryant need not apply. Americas toughness has gone right out the window. Molding boys into men is a no - no now. Tap out after push up 30.

400 pushups in an hour is a ton. That's 6 - 7pushups every minute. Muscle fatigue is almost guaranteed. I imagine most kids couldn't pull that off.

Yea it's a lot. Most people probably can only do at most 50 at a time. If you can do 50 at a time, you can do one set then rest 5 minutes. We have no idea if it was some drill sergeant making them stay in the position the whole time or if the rule was, we want you to get to 400 however in the next 60 minutes.

Also, kids fake pushups all the time

If true, this is way worse (and beyond stupid) than 409 push-ups in an hour.

Any skill position player in high school should be able to easily do 10 sets of 40 in an hour. My best friends on the team would do this with a smile on our face because it's not gasser's or 110 cardio.

Coach cant watch every player. He's not staring at the lineman who's laying down faking it through the sets.

No one said they were doing 7 every minute. That's what someone in this thread started. The only bad thing about this is it's pointless for strength training and will wreck your shoulders.

Let me hijack this thread, briefly.

Fat acceptance is not the landwhale on the cover of Cosmo. It's the average American, 60 - 70% of whom are overweight or obese, thinking they're not.

With that in mind, no, most Americans cannot do 50 pushups at a time. 60 - 70% of us are overweight or obese. I would venture less than 25% of Americans could do a set of 50 proper pushups.

Let the discussion continue.
