What are all of y'all? Cocaine slinging serial killers? You really the government gives two fricks about your DNA.

Yeah they have used services like 23 and me to catch a couple old serial killers. The California murder rings a bell apparently one of his cousins or something did one of these and they were able to use his dna test to find the killer. While this is awesome they caught the guy it’s just weird that they are logging everyone to build a data base

You're wrong. They used an open source DNA database called GED (I think). People loading their DNA into it know ahead of time it is open source and can be used by anyone. The entire premise of this thread is wrong.

NewOrleansBlend beat me to it.

Not quite. His relative uploaded their dna profile to gedmatch.com which is designed to make the dna profile available to anyone (goal is to find new family members). 23 and me doesn’t do that

It’s a way for the “man” to get everyone’s DNA. The one identification that you have to volunteer for them to get and people are paying for the “man” to get their DNA. It’s insane. But I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to oblivion for common sense. Because “the government would never do that!”.

It’s amazing to me how many Idiots submit their DNA to this kind of crap.

I mean, you'd be an idiot if the possible implications never occurred to you. The government already has my DNA on file and I found my biological family through 23andme. Something I had been unable to do for 30 years. Worth it to me. And if any serial killer family members are outed because of me, frick 'em. Don't be a serial killer.

Isn’t it owned by the Google founder or CEOs wife. That may even be worse.

Well technically the site the family member uploaded to was meant to have DNA only accessible to people searching for their relatives. The investigator who “solved” the case in reality obtained the DNA under false pretenses.

I am pretty convinced the Ancestry.com DNA test is bogus. My results showed a large percentage of my heritage from being from somewhere I absolutely know for certain none of my family is originally from. I just have quite a few direct relatives living there for employment purposes, all of whom are in my ancestry.com family tree showing that as a current location. Which really leads me to believe they’re doing nothing more than spewing out percentages based off what you for the most part already knew.

You're right.

In fact, if you read their legal disclosure they can sell your genetic print to anyone they want....morons

Do you have to give them your info? Can't you buy the test for cash at the store, set up a fake email, give them some bs name?

I'd actually like to know the info, but like the OP I've been very leery about just giving my data away (in fact actually paying for someone to collect my data ).

Add to that the fact that the largest two companies have recently been caught either manipulating the data for political reason, or because they want it to seem more accurate than it is, and you have me highly doubting the efficacy of the tests.

I thought the feds had DNA on every single baby born since the 80s.

Anyway, it is an excellent way to get DNA.
Kinda like gun registration. They know where you’re living when the feds crack down.

Best post in a long time.

Remember that "glitch" where a family's Alexa recorded their conversations and emailed them to people in their contact list?

Never in a million years would I own one of those things.

Then what’s the problem? What exactly do you think the govt is going to do with your DNA if you’re not a criminal?
