Started about 1998-99 timeframe. I was in Va or deployed to WESTPAC and IO when this started.

I was in VA in 94-97 and they did it to us then. I got out in 97 so I know it was before then.

I am pretty convinced the Ancestry.com DNA test is bogus. My results showed a large percentage of my heritage from being from somewhere I absolutely know for certain none of my family is originally from. I just have quite a few direct relatives living there for employment purposes, all of whom are in my ancestry.com family tree showing that as a current location. Which really leads me to believe they’re doing nothing more than spewing out percentages based off what you for the most part already knew.

You might consider a non-paternity event somewhere back up the line.

So, if you're one of those people that give your hair to soneone through Locks of Love, and then that person commits a serious crime and leaves behind your DNA from your hair, are you fricked?

True. One illegitimate child in the tree can make a lot of what you think you know about your linage bullshite.

Sorry, what you are saying makes no practical sense. In any case, it was spot on for my family and we have a pretty convoluted family tree, most of which I put together after my test results. Also, they updated their algorithm recently and it definitely improved them. If you haven't you should log back in and update your results. It's free.

Not if you have an alibi.

Yeah they have used services like 23 and me to catch a couple old serial killers. The California murder rings a bell apparently one of his cousins or something did one of these and they were able to use his dna test to find the killer. While this is awesome they caught the guy it’s just weird that they are logging everyone to build a data base

I'm not saying I don't want the gov't to be able to catch serial killers, I just think it should be a level playing field.

I guess no one knows what the government is going to do with my volunteered DNA?

It matched what I knew about my genealogy almost exactly. And I'm from a Mormon family so my genealogy has been researched pretty extensively. It also matched me to family members, both known and unknown to me, and did so without my real name or any info. There are legit reasons to worry about your privacy but they've demonstrated to me that they aren't just making shite up.

Some of the people claiming their results don't match their known genealogy should consider two things:

1. A single unfaithful spouse can skew anything you think you know about your genealogy
2. Just because your family has lived somewhere for xxx amount of years, it doesn't mean that they were originally from there. Your family might have lived in Ireland for the past 600 years but that doesn't mean your family is genetically Irish
