IPhone owners can sue Apple for monopolizing App Store, Supreme Court rules

A group of iPhone owners accusing Apple of violating US antitrust rules because of its App Store monopoly can sue the company, the Supreme Court ruled Monday.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in the majority opinion, said that when "retailers engage in unlawful anticompetitive conduct that harms consumers," people buying those companies' products have the right to hold the businesses to account.
"That is why we have antitrust law," Kavanaugh wrote. The court's four liberal justices joined Kavanaugh in the 5-4 decision.
Apple (AAPL) does not allow customers to download apps from any other source other than the iTunes App Store. Unlike Android, iOS customers can only get apps from that official source, which Apple says serves as kind of quality control to weed out security threats and apps that violate the company's terms of service.
The Supreme Court did not rule on the customers' likelihood of success — only that they have the right to sue. Apple argued that it was not a monopoly, rather a platform for app developers who can set their own prices. It has said that if the court allowed the case to proceed, it would disrupt the e-commerce market.

This liberal a-hole. Knew he would do nothing but protect big business.

Kavanaugh is going to push for free market enterprise, which this decision does. I’m a conservative, but those other conservative judges ruling in Apple’s favor are stupid. Being a conservative they should protect free economy, not big business monopolies like Apple

Seems like it should be a 9-0 decision.
You shouldn't have to jail break your iPhone to install an app Apple doesn't like. Just let people install it and give them a warning before hand that by installing this app you will break the terms of service with Apple.

Exactly. I don't understand the reasoning behind the conservative judges decisions...I'm probably missing something.

The sarcasm is pretty easy to see considering it's exactly the opposite of protecting big business

I thought it was too, I'm still surprised by people blinded by political rage though.

I hope this decision leads to "unapproved" apps being readily available for install on iPhone. The Apple app store is one of the main reasons competitors to Twitter and FB have trouble getting off the ground. For example if apple allowed GAB app to be installed on iPhone the competition toward Twitter would be much bigger.

Haing to use the Apple Store and go thru iTunes to do anything are the two main reasons I don't have an iPhone.
fricking Apple acts like it still owns the phone after you bought it.

Um, disruption is one the healthiest things that can happen in a free market economy.
Thanks for showing your hand Apple.

This is essentially what Android phones do whenever you install an app from apkmirror or a similar source

This. I refuse to own apple products because of it. It isn't that they make bad products. It's the fact it is their way or the highway once you own anything from them.

Can I sue Microsoft for not letting me buy Playstation games on the XBOX Store?

Why?
You can always buy a different kind of phone. Let the free market decide if Apple should keep doing this.
How dare auto-manufacturers build their high end vehicles with parts that can't be replaced with generics from AutoZone! They should be forced to make maintenance on their vehicles cheaper!

Perfect example of a free market at work.
If enough people had your dedication to not buying Apple because of this, they would change their policies.
We shouldn't force their hand here. Let the consumer decide.
