I just bought a new house and in the living room and kitchen is a dark, chocolate brown laminate (which I am not a fan of, but will not take out because it is new). In the bedrooms are shitty carpet. I hate carpet. I want flooring. However, I am concerned about going more laminate. What would be a good transition - should I just buy the same kind or go for a light colored laminate? Trying to visualize...

is never the answer.

Just pony up the $ for hard wood now

eta: or maybe engineered wood, tile that looks like wood, or concrete.

I've been liking this a lot lately. Will be looking into it more when it's time for new flooring at the house.

Rip up the carpet and put down exotic animal pelts. Bitches love pelts.

I was thinking about the concrete option. My laminate is exposed once you walk into the house - living room and kitchen. Both bathrooms are tiled. As you walk in, my master bedroom is to the right. As you walk in, carpet. The master bath is the left and tile (light colored).

The other two bedrooms are to the left as you walk in with the guest bath in between them.

I just don't know what would look best. This is not a poor people question, I genuinely am willing to spend, but I want to know what the consensus is...may ask some of my female friends over to help out.

Real hardwood or engineered wood.

The tile that looks like wood is nice but I don't think that would be very comfortable in a bedroom.

Does the carpet match the drapes?

A good friend of mine has this stuff, and it's amazing. Looks like rustic wood but feels like tile. Super easy to clean and don't have to worry about scarring it up with furniture or pets.

If you're going to rip out the carpet and put down some sort of wood make sure it matches with the wood that is in the rest of the house.

If you don't want it to look like shite either get the same wood laminate that's in your living area, or rip it all up and put something new throughout.

Want this to, but have an old pier and beam home. Using backerboard is an option but I risk the grout cracking if I use tile more than 10-12"

Check into New Pine tongue and groove.
You can get it in 5 1/4", 6", and 6 1/2" widths.
Pricing on it is under $1 per sf and after installation, sanding, and finishing, has the look of antique heart pine. The only difference is the tightness of the grain (number of grain lines). Completed floor should be no more than $5 sf . That's not a bad deal for the product you're getting considering $3 of that is just in wood, glue, sandpaper, stain, and polyurethane.
I would upload pictures of some I've done but I'm a idiot and I don't know how to put them on here lol.

Put that instead of laminate. Water proof, better look, no tapping sounds. You're welcome

I have an older home off of the ground. Had plywood and lenolium in the kitchen. I installed 1/2" cement board, taped the seams and "floated" them with some sort of grout to make it fairly seamless. Installed 16" square tile with +-5/16" joints. Did this work in the summer of 07 and have had zero problems, not a single crack.

On the other hand, part of my house is on slab. I installed brick pavers without prepping a joint between slabs as well and it looks like San Andreas now.

To me it's not worth it if you can't use longer tiles with very little grout. Looks too much like just tile in the shorter lengths. 36" x 6" looks the best.

What color? My concern is the dark laminate already down in the living room which connects all the bedrooms...should I go a light color?
